Partner moving in - who/how to contact

My partner will be moving in with me this week and I'm very confused about what my first steps are. Who do I need to contact first? I currently claim;

Income Support
Child Tax Credits
Housing Benefit
Carers Allowance
DLA for my son

My partner works 25hrs a week.

I am aware the income support will stop and I basically need to update all my others to a join claim but I'm not sure where to start. Can I do it all over the phone? Can't really get into the office with my partner due to the hours and distance he works and we don't drive.

Also, I live in a Housing Association house, so what happens with that, do I just inform them of him moving in and let them know we have made a joint claim for HB or do we need to make that a joint tennancy first?

I appreciate any help, as you can probably tell, I'm totally confused! Thanks.

  • I cannot believe you have not considered any of this before you made the decision to let someone move in.

I seriously think you should work this through because I anticipate your next thread to be "My partner moved in and now I cannot afford to live on my reduced benefits".

Close tax credits claim and claim again as a couple. You will lose your income support. Also need to update housing benefit and council tax benefit of your new circumstances, they will want to see your partners wage slips to work out what your new award will be. So you will have to be paying towards your rent now

We have considered it actually. Like I said, I am aware income support will stop and everything else will need to be changed to joint claims. My question wasn't "how much money will we have", I was asking how I go about changing my details and who to go to first.

Feel free to check my previous posts and you'll find out that I posted back in October about what my partner and I might be entitled to, so it's been quite some time we've been considering it. We're pretty sure we can afford to live and even if it is a struggle, I'd rather come off income support and have the support of my partner here to help with our son who is disabled.

I find you're post quite cheeky to be honest, almost as if you think I should be staying on benefits and not let my partner move in.

The DLA & carers allowance won't be affected. It should be on award letters who you need to contact.

The Entitled to website will help you understand some changes to your benefits because of your partner's income.

Your tenancy handbook or the website of the HA should indicate if/how you can change the tenancy from a sole to a joint one or if you even need to advise them if someone moves in with you.

However, you should think seriously about such a big step because if the relationship breaks down, under the terms of a joint tenancy, he will be entitled to remain in the property. There are frequent threads on the Housing Forum about disputes over who will remain in the property at the end of a relationship. It is possible for it to be his home without it becoming his property simply by keeping things as-is (sole tenancy in your name).

My advice is to contact them all and explain the situation. Find out if you need to put in a new claim or simply do a change of circumstances. Don't wait to get one sorted before telling another as you'll end up with overpayments that could have been avoided. Give in the info you have and let them know that other benefits are being reassessed and you will hand in info when you get it.

You could get a joint tenancy but don't have to just letting them know that he has/is moving in is fine.
