Hi folks
Wondering if any of you can help me. I have a 2004 Ford Focus & the manual recommends using Ford Formula E engine oil. I'm now finding this difficult to get & was wondering if i could use any oil as long as it was the same spec?

Ford Formula E oil should be available at any Ford garage. Any 5w30 grade oil which states the Ford spec, or says for use in Ford engines on the can, will be ok.0

Put your registration number in to Halfords Web Site, it will tell you which oil is suitable for your car.0

castrol do a ford specific 5w 30 semi synthetic magnatec oil, its usually around £30 for 4 litres, but you need 4.5 litres, castrol should know this as they know how much engine the sump holds, but they make it short. so you need to either buy another tub at around £30 or a 1 litre top up tub at around £10 per litre. theiving f*ckers.
or go to tesco they sell ford specific 5w 30 semi synthetic oil,it conforms to the exact same ford spec numbers as the castrol stuff does but it comes in 5 litres i think. i bought some the last time it was on offer ( buy one get one free i think).and much cheaper than the castrol stuff....work permit granted!0 -
Oil is oil, your car is out of warranty. Providing the oil is the right spec it is not going to cause any problems. Get the cheapest oil you can get which is of identical spec. I am sure you will find some good stuff at £20 a for 5 litres.
PS I am sure it is less than £20 for 5 ltires at Ford dealers.0 -
Ford also reccomend Shell Helix premium or some similar overpriced premium fuel thats only supplied by one group of petrol stations. Doesnt mean another supplier of fuel will cause your car to blow up.0

ignore this advice!
zetec engines need a certain type of oil.
use the wrong grade it'l stick a valve down and the oil will collect behind the piston rings and damage them. use too thin a oil and your more likely to damage majour parts like crank, big end bareings, cams, valves, stem seals etc.
oils or of a certain grade and a certain type for a reason. useing the wrong one will damage an engine.
valvaline do a zetec oil ask any stocklist for for your aplications specification!
jd82 i hope you dont own a 1.25 zetec fiesta as if you have this attitude towards what oil you put in it youll be sorry for doing so!0 -
If you re-read his post he used the words 'identical spec' and he's correct.
Providing it meets the Ford specification (which isn't very onerous), it will do just fine.0 -
I don't know if he did, but I did own a 1.25 Zetc Fiesta Si 16v for 4 years and in that time I did all my own oil changes using normal supermarket labelled 5w30 which met or exceeded the spec as specified in the cars manual. I sold the car with 97k on the clock and the engine was running absolutely perfect.0

Try your local Ford dealer.
I priced up the Ford Spec 5W-30 oil in Halfords, Tesco and a local motor factors and the local Ford main dealer was cheaper for its own 5 litres of Ford Formula E semi synthetic that all the other places I tried for equivalent spec oil.
I must admit I was surprised but there you go.
