Hello Old Schoolers
Ive got a bag of rice in the old larder, I don't think I have ever cooked plain long grain rice before, usually opting for 'golden vegetable' packet rice.
However in true OS style I want to use up the rice and develop a method to make it taste as good if not better as it will be cheaper to buy this 'plain rice in future.
Firstly, I am a bit timid to cook the rice, as I have tasted some right rice disasters in the past, has anyone got a failsafe method for decent rice every time?
Also as anyone got any additions to liven it up a bit?
cheers guys!0 -
turn it into egg fried rice? That way you can chuck in anything you like (even add a little curry paste maybe)??Emma

This was really good, although I had as a side without any spinach added etc
I usually just boil basmati rice in plenty of boiling water for 8-10 mins, then rinse in lots of frshly boiled water, and make sure am serving with tasty stuff though. I bulk buy aged basmati (usually tilda, but got a 6kg bag of different stuff from tesco the other day for 4.99)0 -

Do you reckon it would work with normal 'long grain' rice?
sounds tasty, much more so than the bland stodge I have had in the past!0 -
Foolproof rice cooking.
Measure the amount you want to cook - I use a mugful for two of us, you may be less greedy
Rinse the rice in a sieve under running water, and put it in a pan with a tablespoon of oil over a low heat.
Stir the rice very gently to coat it all with oil.
Add exactly twice the quantity of water to rice - two mugfuls in our case.
Bring to the boil and immediately reduce the heat to the barest simmer. Cover with a tight fitting lid and leave until all the water is absorbed - about 20 mins. Fluff it up with a fork and serve.
You can also do it in the Remoska this way, if you have one. Just coat the rice with oil as descibed, put the water in, pop the lid on and leave until all the water's absorbed. Simples
Also, if you happen to have your oven on, and your pan is ovenproof, you can put the water in, cover tightly and place it at the bottom of the oven to finish.Official DFW Nerd No 096 - Proud to have dealt with my debt!0
