Hi hypno - I have been trying to keep up with your diary and do post - though not very often. Will be lovely coming home and seeing the work they have done on the front garden.

I wanted to ask some advice if thats ok :o I haven't been too well of late and have been inspired by your thread regarding making your home the best you can. It got me to thinking of how if I could get my home to look the best it can until I can afford the more expensive jobs that need to be done then it will feel nice to be in and this in turn should make me feel better too. If that makes any sense... Anyway I have been decluttering for what seems like forever but still feel there's some way to go. I read a post of yours about how we keep hold of items for all sorts of different reasons when we should just let go. What I really need to do is tackle my wardrobe - it is only small and holds everything (or needs to) - coats, jackets, winterwear, summerwear etc. but everything doesn't fit in so its making other areas untidy. I have got rid of things based on if it doesn't fit it has to go - other than my dress which should fit when i'm at goal weight :o I have also got rid of items that i haven't worn in a long time and really need a new strategy for going in there and really having a good clearout. I was just wondering if there is any advice you can offer to me?

Sorry for the massive ramble! Also Hi to everyone else and hope everyone has a good Wednesday

Hiya Dedicated DFW! I'm not Hypno, but I lurve decluttering. I *think* Hypno has massive clearouts, but I don't - I do it bit by bit. If I do a massive one, I don't actually chuck it out, I put it to one side in plastic bags, and check it out again a week or so later. If I still feel the same way, it goes out - if not, it goes back in. And I do that as many times as I need - I've only just started on my clothes, but I've done that with books for ages, and it works really well (for me!).

Sorry you're not well, I had a long bout of that myself, when decluttering was the only thing I could do, couldn't go out of the house for months unless someone was with me. I hope you feel better soon.

Hey DFW, I love cleaning and clearing. I'll do it for you!!! Seriously though if it doesn't fit or suit or you haven't worn it in 6 months then sell it, bin it or charity shop it but GET RID OF IT. There's nothing to be gained from living in a mess. YOU know what suits and what you wear. The rest must go. My wardrobe is small too so my Winter/Summer stuff gets vacumm bagged up and stuck under the bed so that everything in the wardrobe is stuff I would wear in the next few weeks. This is then all ironed and hung on individual wooden hangers....but then I'm a bit of a wardrobe Nazi!!!

Hi DDFW, I'm currently doing the wardrobe clearing too. All my winter clothes get put in suitcases/bags out of the way until next year. Also any things I've got an excess of e.g. work out how many dresses, blouses you need on a regular basis, put the excess away for next summer. You could have one suitcase just for the excess in case you do find you need some of them, so keep seperate from the autumn winter clothes.

Monday was trying on everything and looking in the mirror to see what looked right and what didn't, anything that didn't look right went either in the bin or charity shop pile depending on condition.

Especially if you've been unwell it's nice to wear the clothes that make you feel good about yourself.

First off all, I need to announce the results of this week's WI - 1.5lbs OFF.....taking me down to 10st 8lbs.....def getting there :j:j:j

DDFW, re the wardrobe declutter, it has taken me several attempts at it before I felt as though I got anywhere.....

Last year, I took out some things I really hated, and didn't know why I even had them. That was easy, really, and they just went to the charity shop.

Then I took out some things that I was too fat for, and put them on a shelf on the basis that if they were still on the shelf in 6 months time, then I was unlikely to ever fit into them so they could go.

Next was the stuff that I was ashamed to still wear - t-shirts that have been relegated to "slobbing about" or decorating in - misshapen sweaters etc - for goodness sake, how many decorating clothes does one person need!

Then I went back and looked at the things I couldn't remember when I last wore, and with the exception of a couple of formal evening gowns which obviously aren't going to be work every week, I got rid of a lot of things that had been unworn for perhaps years.

In doing that last one, I had to do a fair bit of soul searching - why did I not wear it? Was it because I was too fat, felt too frumpy, didn't like it, didn't suit it, didn't have anything to wear with it etc etc etc.....being honest about it was actually a bit harder than I thought, but I was very pleased when I did it and got rid.

That also involved accepting that I will not be a size 8 again, so all that stuff I had put on the shelf previously, could go, rather than me constantly stare at it and wonder why I can't be that thin again.

Finally, I got rid of stuff I was simply bored with - the stuff I have, in reality, been wearing week in week out, and I just no longer enjoy wearing it, or seeing it hanging there. This was difficult on an MSE basis, because it meant getting rid of the practical stuff, that would then need replacing in due course......but actually, it was the most liberating bit of all!

So, it took me several revisits, over a period of about six months. And I dare say I could have another go at it and still throw stuff out.......

I did the same exercise for coats, and underwear etc too so it really was quite a job!!

Well done Hypno on the weight loss, especially as you weren't overly optimistic about losing any this week :)

I'm quite good at getting rid of clothes that I no longer wear/like, but usually 2-3 years later when I look at photos were I'm wearing them, I'm thinking "why did I get rid of that, it looks great?!" - and wish I hadn't....Go figure. :)
