Always wondered about putting food in kongs - does it not make a horrible slimy mess when they eat it? Thinking about the potential damage to my carpets unless I ban her to the kitchen. All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.
Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.0 -
I put paste and some cut up tripe bits, a few puppy sized marrowbones and seal it up by stuffing one or two of the actual kong stuffing biscuits in the hole. My dog has wet food, won't eat kibble any more, so putting food in there would be too messy for me.0

I bought a lovely cream, pink and purple rug. Then 2 weeks later got a puppy. Said rug is now rolled up in the corner and we have a 'lovely' brown one. It hides the marks better. :rotfl:0 -
if the food is frozen overnight it comes out in chunks, and she gets through it too fast for it to melt.
i mean some peanut butter does get on the floor, but she is quick to lick it up.
i dont think i would put wet food in the kong though - that might make a bit more of a mess.0 -
We used to put wet food in the biscuit kong for out last weimy, it was naturediet so not messy to eat, especially when combined with biscuits. For the pup and our american cocker we use cream cheese or meat paste and dog biscuits, cheese and whatevers lying around. We also use a bustercube, which only takes kibble, this keeps them occupied for a good hour, chasing food around the room as it drops out :rotfl:

Poundworld have dog toys of varying types. Perhaps if they only cost £1 it wouldnt seem too bad! They also have the rope ones. I have had one of every type for our Yorkie, but accept that he has quite a small bite so he hasnt destroyed them. He particularly likes the squeaky chicken, the furry chicken with rope legs and his all time fave is the squeaky burger. The rope tugs seem quite robust.
Have you tried freezing your kong? It makes them last longer.0 -
I tend to put some of last nights tea (ours) then freeze it over night, marmite spread around the inside is good too!0

My dog is quite a strong chewer!
I have given up buying squeaky things as they only last a couple of mins and the squeak has gone and there is a hole in it!! So no matter how cheap they are it's a false economy! As much as he loves cuddly toys I only use them now when I am playing with him as he makes a hole in them, then starts eating the stuffing!!
I agree with Kongs and Buster cubes they have lasted him really well and Nylabones too but make sure you get the hard powerful durable Nylabone as my dog just wrecked the rubber ones really quick!
The only other thing I would recommend is one of these (in the correct size)

I bought mine in August and it's still in one piece and squeaks - which is a miracle!!I find vetuk a lot cheaper than getting the same thing at pets@home and if you spend over £15 you get free delivery so I stock up from there now and again as you get loads more for your money. They also do wormers, flea stuff etc. a lot cheaper.
ps. I also have the Kong tennis balls which I find pretty good although he does start eating the yellow cover stuff after a while. The squeakers in those are rubbish too  they only last a couple of minutes too even when light chewing - which really annoys meas I would expect them to be better quality from Kong!! Rant over !!!

we also have a buster cube like thing too for my dog, but we cant leave her unsupervised with it.
other good toys (not for chewing though!) are the nina ottoson games. they are quite expensive but my dog loves them. she figured out how to work the tornado quite quickly, but we havent yet moved up to the advanced level on the dog twister yet.
i also am disappointed with the kong squeaker in the tennis balls, but on the positive, even though the squeak is gone, they still dont crack like normal cheap pet tennis balls - so in that respect they do tend to last a bit longer. and, can sometimes be cheaper then proper tennis balls. and i suppose that having the squeak gone isnt too bad.... i'd prefer that than to be squeaked at during the middle of the night!0 -
I have 2 pwerful chewers who wreck all toys (rottie and staffie). Their favourite things to play with are long rope toys and large empty plastic bottles.
Like the OP I regularly spend a fortune on the latest unbreakable toy but none of them are any good for my dogs. They won't chew nylabones (boring!), kongs are ok if filled or have a rope added to them to make them more interesting, cuddly toys are desqueaked, tennis balls are skinned etc etc
I generally now give them bones from the butcher which are free and give them a few hours entertainment. That and empty bottles from asda smart price water makes for very cheap entertainment. I sometimes add some stones or kibble to the bottles to make them more interesting. You do need to supervise your dogs playing with them though as some dogs try to remove the lid and plastic ring which can be dangerous.
I have a cautionary tale about filling kongs with food - be very careful if you put meat in them. I did this a few times last year with no ill effect but then ended up with a room (sofa, floor, units) covered in maggots as the kong wasn't finished by the dogs and rolled under the coffee table. Not pleasant!!If you always do what you have always done, you will always get what you always got!0
