In that case theoretically everyone on Ebay is a trader, because at one time the chances are that they have paid for the item they are selling???

standard mail is covered for 100x the value of a 1st class stamp
    so £39 for now

Could you tell me what the £39 is for? I have just had a time sheet lost in the post that was sent 1st class recorded. It has cost me money as I have not been paid. However I sent something else first class recorded it the past that was lost, and all I got was 6 x first class stamps!!! I would love to know what the £39 actually covers as they seem to get out of it. To be honest I wonder if sending something recorded makes it more likely to get stolen?!!

nope,if you want consequential loss then you use a service that covers it
thats SD with consequential loss insurance added

edit: you 'only 6 1st class stamps' gives you compensation value of £2.34
your RD letter would have cost £1.14 to send for a standard letter

always send by recorded its usually only about 50p - £1 more which is well worth it when you know people will have no leg to stand on if they say it hasn't arrived, or at least it will be on the RM to compensate should delivery fail. Proof of postage on first class means nothing, you could use it to show buyer you have sent but its just a receipt with a post code on so no real proof, the major problem being that when countering a INR case on pay-pal you cannot use this as proof the only thing you can do is enter a proper tracking number, this is enforce by the website designed so you cannot do anything to reopen or progress a case against the buyer without one.

This happened to me , i first tried RM insurance which i found out about (upto £39 compo) item i sent was £34 so i got a form filled it in and waited 2 wees for reply, they turned me down saying they wouldn't refund but sent a book of stamps as gwg - i wasn't happy though as i knew i posted it, with about 14 other items that all reached there destination, and as it was the first time in 9 years of ebaying anything had gone missing, i went mad at paypal, bombarded them with complaints and kept reopening cases with anything i could use to get through their forms and procedures, always replied to their surveys with complaints and just would not drop it and sent the scanned proof of postage, they eventually gave me the £34 back but im sure i had wasted a lot of their staffs time having to look back through all the details of an extensive case.

as soon as the other party claimed my account went into minus and the only thing i could do was add funds or enter RM tracking number, if you are the buyer make sure you do it straight away as the seller could remove bank details from their account.

. If someone sends you something not recorded and you say it hasn't arrived you WILL get a refund without a doubt, even if you have it in your hands, the seller needs to send recorded to protect themselves or they open themselves up to fraud that will be enforced by pay-pal in that particular situation.

my advice send all recorded (the extra cost is worth the safeguard) if you receive an item not recorded, try to be good enough not to take advantage and get an sneaky refund.
