thanks to all for your replies
i have some idea now how to get her in
she has found ONE scholarship she could apply to at harvard
(and yes she really does have a lot saved up) and she may not get that scholarship but its worth applying,
i agree its different over in the US academically
however she is really determined. hence 5 years at least of telling me thats where she is going (US not specifically harvard)
if she hates it she can come back
one of her teachers is american and maybe that didnt help.
i asked if canada would do but no USA it is.:)

i have to admire her persistence at least
    63 mortgage payments to go.

If money is any kind of issue, then a far more cost-effective solution would be to study in the UK and spend a year in the USA as an exchange student.

Money doesn't seem to be an issue as the OP's daughter has saved over 60K!

Even then, that would not last you the full four years. At the current exchange rate it wouldn't even last two years.

You need to take into consideration, Administration fee's, think someone already mentioned that. I looked at going to uni in America, so you also have to PAY to take tests to make sure you're suitable for that uni. Also, flights to and from home. Will she be granted a Visa? Not everyone is.. It's also not just about grades. It's about how you present yourself and to go to an Ivy league school your family also has to be well off. As her parent you will need to have quite a few pennies in your bank too, they will want to see that.

i think she should go for it. whats the worst that could happen? She hates it and comes home. If she has the money then why not? (we don't know how she got the money, she may of inherited some of it or won £100,000 on the lottery) Shes young and has this opportunity. IF she can fund herself for a year then maybe her university might help her if she proves herself to be a good student. I love the idea of going to US for college.

I don't know much about colleges, only from watching TV shows but it seems Yale has the best english department and Brown is where lesbians go. ( Source - Gossip Girl) I myself would go to NYU or Colombia as you would be living in New York, but thats my own opinion. Good luck to missprice jr.

You can't use Gossip Girl as a source, it's fictional!! If she only attends a year you will still have to pay for the remainder of the degree, I really wanted to go to NYU and researched for hours on end, weeks, months. It's very very costly.
  • According to a story in a Boston newspaper this week, the cost of next year at Harvard is likely to be $50k next year for room, board and tuition. I've just done the calculation and that's about £33k for this year alone.

Assume it's going up 3.8% every year for four years.......

OP, how exactly has your daughter managed to save that much money - because I want one of those jobs for my kids.......!!!!!!:)

At the same time, the school said it would increase undergraduate financial aid for the 2010-11 school year by 9 percent, to $158 million. More than 60 percent of students receive aid, with need-based grants averaging about $40,000, Harvard said.

    from same article

i am sorry its none of your business how one of my children came to have this much money:)

also it does not HAVE to be harvard
honestly she is over the age of consent now and what i say means nothing (hasnt for years if im honest) so if she wants to go stateside for education lets applaud her, not do her down
yes it will cost so what?
yes it different and not necessarily of any use back home
yes she may get home sick
yes she may end up well out of pocket
yes she may end up living there and i wont see her from year to year
yes the whole thing may come to naught, but at least she has a plan and is trying to make it happen
she has already sourced SATs in this country that are acceptable in the US
and again thanks for the many links and useful articles
    your all ickle lovies
