Could I ask how she intends to fund her studies? The costs involved are massive.

If she is looking at Harvard, I doubt that 'any college would do'. What grades is she predicted, does she excel in sports/ music etc?
    Gone ... or have I?

she will fund herself, she has a massive amount saved already and a year still to save

she excels in eng lit and harvard are apparently 'the best' for this

sho aint so brilliant at sports so she wont get a scholarship

and yes truly any college in the USA will do
as she says 'no harm applying to Harvard and the other ivy league schools'
worst they can say is no

eta grades are all expected to be As and A*

Having looked it varies between faculty, however, the tuition fees are around $30-35k a year..... I cannot believe she has saved up this much.

    is it really so unbelievable?

she has known for around 5 years that this is what she wants to do
but as her mother i expected her to change her mind
she has more than enough to pay fees for 3 years but then theres food and rent,
at least i can try to help her get there

I'm sorry but I find it difficult to believe someone under 18 has over £60k.......

Nothing against her or you but I just find it hard to believe.

However, you might want to look here:

I have no idea how reputable this company is though.

All information to apply will be supplied on their websites. She will need to sit all the relevant tests (SATs and the like) and it is usual for colleges to ask for essays in their applications. They provide a question, the prospective student writes an answer. Some universities also ask for application payments too, so applying anywhere and everywhere could soon add up!

If she is academic enough, has extra-curriculars (much more important there than here) and has proof of funds then she will most likely stand in good stead.

However, I would ask whether she is aware of the (very) different degree system over there? I would also point out that Princeton is seen as much better for undergraduates, because Harvard seems to take a much more graduate focus.

Finally, how does she know Harvard is 'the best'? Through which measure is this? English is a subject where departmental focuses will be wide-ranging. It would be much better to focus on what she wants to study.

Try reading that too, someone has made a list of things you do when you apply and such.

yes she does realise its much more difficult over there and she already knows about the SATs and is already planning when and where to do them.

i dont think she is plamnning to apply to every single college
but i can pay for application fees for some at least
i dont know what criteria she used to decide Harvard is the best
but she told me this morning they have a distinguished record with eng lit.
at the end of the day, it has to be her choice
i shall let her resaerch princeton and a whole raft of others then if she gets to a shortlist of 3 or 4 we can start.

yes she does have masses of extra curicular, mostly based on gay, lesbian and bi-sexual matters
    will this help or hinder?

    lokolo cheers for the link

I wouldn't say the system is more difficult, just different. It's more like the Scottish system in that you aren't just doing one course for the full time.

I think the fee for Harvard is $75, so if they are all that or similar it can get expensive. Although if she can afford over $50,000 per year, a few hundred won't really matter that much.

I'm not really sure on the EC side of things. I'm sure it would help an application, I don't see why not.
