France Telecom yesterday reported a slight increase in first-half profits, its flagship Orange mobile phone operation is limping in the UK. Over the three months to the end of June the company actually lost 167,000 contract customers, though it gained 160,000 pre-paid users.

One of the sources of Orange's woes seems to have been O2, which yesterday announced it grabbed 474,000 new UK customers in the same period, 188,000 of whom signed contracts.

I suspect a lot of the pre-paid users are those who left Orange and got their number transferred to a PAYG SIM rather than porting it to their new network. The majority of these won't actually be active users and their SIMs will be deactivated in 6 months as they won't be used.

I rang to cancel yesterday and got cut off half way through the conversation of why I was leaving!! Rang back and had to explain again. Was asked if there was anything they could do to change my mind ... Can you increase the signal in the city I live in so I can actually have a conversation without saying Pardon, Pardon what was that?... can you stop me getting missed call alerts when my phone is in front of me and does have signal? Nope? Cherio then I'm off to a cheaper network with better service! :p

have to say orange's customer service isnt really of any service just a pain, although cancelling a contract is probably the easiest of all the networks. I dont think they have a "retentions" department.

Can't say I'm surprised, I've just left Orange to join T-Mobile and they were distinctly uninterested in keeping my custom and their retentions department was more like the Monty Python arguement/abuse sketch, never dealt with someone so surly and unhelpful.
Orange are so anal about rules and won't budge from them, they wouldn't even give me the phone I wanted free (they wanted £149.99) which I could have got with an new contract on my tariff.
Much more impressed with T-Mobile and at least the people I've spoken to on the phone seem to be helpful and happy which is something that I can't say for orange.
  • I'm another one that left Orange about 4 months ago - I'm much happier with my T-mobile plan and their customer service (well so far) is a hell of a lot better than that at Orange

Me too, I am still on contract for a few months however I have already joined O2. When I called Orange re an upgrade they didn;t have/want to help.

Found out that O2 has better reception where I live too, couldn;t be happier!
It's nice to be nutty but's more important to be nice
