Cancelling Swiftcover car insurance but they want money, how, why?

Hey guys, my first post on this great site and I hope to contribute in the future.

Basically my query is, I'm thinking of cancelling my car insurance with swiftcover.com. I may want to do this as someone smashed into the side of my car on monday so I reported it and as I'm only third party they will not fix my car, and the repair may cost more than the car is worth, so I will not be buying a car for sometime. I wasn't in the wrong when somebody hit me and I'm getting no repair from it.

Now I pay monthly, and obviously at first paid a deposit, I'm 4 months into my policy.

Now the company have told me if I wish to cancel, it will cost me £462 which includes insurance tax premium, excluding any direct debits due.

Why is this? When I pay monthly and upfront!

Thanks.

It's a 12 month contract that you pay for monthly, not a monthly policy.

I see, thanks a lot. In that case the car might aswell sit there and be insured.

    Thanks for your quick reply.

If you werent in the wrong, and it was somebody elses fault, the idea is that you claim from their insurance.

Is there something stopping you from doing this.

I thought the same, isn't this down to my insurer to do? Or do I have to directly contact his insurance?

The person drove into the side of me, refused to take blame too.

Yeah you need to put in a claim against the other person. Get on the phone to your company.

It has nothing to do with your insurance company.
Do you have any legal cover on your car policy or any with
your house insurance who would help you along.

I really fail to see that if the ran into the side of you they can dispute it.

  • I see, first time I have ever been involved in an accident/incident.

I do have legal cover yes on my car insurance, looks as if I should contact my insurance then about this and get his details because bottom line is if my car was done in, I should get it repaired, that's what I pay for.

No it isn't. You said that you purchased Third Party cover. This means that you are paying to have any claims covered that are made against you by a Third Party - not to have your own car repaired.

You need to claim against the other driver as in this case you are the Third Party - if you see what I mean.

Dig out your paper work from when you took the policy out - it will have details of who provides you legal cover and their contact details. Be careful though, as like most firms of solicitors/claims handlers, they will only take on your case if it is winnable. You haven't provided much detail of what happened other then the other car went into the side of you - how did it happen? Were you pulling out of a junction and he hit you? If so you will probably struggle to put a successful claim against him.

  • Thanks, that's what I was thinking, although third party he hit me.

I was pulling out of a junction on my way to work, my lights were green so as i drove through going straight ( i couldn't see to my left much), I just saw a jeep come towards me right into the side of me.

The lights I went through were definitely green because others behind me also went through, and on my right hand side to turn right. I was doing about 15mph he was doing about 20 atleast.

He was driving straight but on the right hand lane which is only meant to turn right , the left hand lane is for left turnings and people to go straight. He said I went through a red which is no chance because atleast 6 cars behind me went, maybe he tried to go through a light just turning red? That's why I was going slower.

So I guess I should just leave it and see how it goes as my insurance are aware of this.

The thing is, I don't want to lose no claims and have my premium go up because, 1. I was not at fault and 2. I am not claiming anything, just reported the incident.

    Thanks
  • Hi Crazy Gooner,

You won't lose any no claims as you're not the one being claimed from/in the wrong. If Mr Jeep's insurance co. agree that it's his fault, it's his no claims that will be affected.

Did you exchange details with him at the time?
