Netgear DG834GT 108Mbps ADSL router

Hi,

Have decided to join E7even on their 512 package. Question being,is the above modem router really what I need or should I buy a cheaper one?
1) Want to use my laptop downstairs and my desktop upstairs via wireless. Need the card as my laptop is afew years old.
2) Spend alot of time on the internet but not for downloading or games. Like too listen to the radio sometimes though.
3) For some strange reason I have four phones in the house,do I need four microfilters?

Thanks for any advice.

You only need a microfilter where you have the modem/router plugged in.

A microfilter splits your phone line into two parts. One part for your phone calls, and one part for your broadband. You need to plug any phone you use into a microfilter to to tell it which part of the phone line to use. So you will need four microfilters for the phones plus one for your sky box if you have one connected to the telephone line. Also if you have a fax, it would need a filter as well.

Basically one for every phone extension.

    Not True.

You need a filter on every phone socket where there is a phone or Sky box (Freeview as well if it plugs into the phone socket). The job of the filter is primarily to filter out the noise from the phones to give a good ADSL connection.

I have the older version of this router without the (T) so it only does wireless at 54Mbps rather than 108Mbps. Note that you have to have the matching Netgear wireless card for the laptop to achieve 108Mps and it is restricted to one pair of wireless channels.

Depends how much LAN traffic (Laptop to PC) traffic you expect to have. Remember that the ADSL speed is 512kps down and 256kps up. If you don't expect to transfer much between PC's using the LAN then the none T version would be adequate and cheaper.

    How old is the laptop?

Your broadband will be 512Kbps or you can look at it as 0.5Mbps. At 108Mbps this makes the router over 200 times quicker than your broadband connection. The only time you will notice the speed difference will be when you transfer files from one computer to another. If you plan to do this a lot then go for the faster router. You will notice no difference on the internet if you use a 54Mbps router. This is still over 100 times faster than your broadband connection. For a home network the slower version will be more than enough to use.

Take a look at this and save yourself £30.

    Thanks for the replys..

Rex - Would not save myself £30 only £5 as a laptop card is extra.
Will go with the faster model for £5 more.

The deals are not that cheap the unbranded kit is cheaper and better, look at the ebuyer own brander 108 ADSL modem router around £60 or get seperates I was looking at a £19 ADSL single enterner modem and a £40 108m wireless access point. Lets you upgrade independently. Check the reviews and comments.
