how about homemade crusty bread with a flask of homemade soup each?
i made a massive batch of soup last week from reduced/whoopsie leeks & potatoes, and a batch of chicken and veg - made about 3L of each at a cost of about £2 each, so will do me for 12 x 1/2L flasks of soup.

You could make up a large batch of couscous, rice or pasta, add extra veggies/some chicken/chorizo/salami strips/cheese/bolog sauce etc., and split into one-portion tubs. I tend to do this one week and have sandwiches the next.I believe in the freedom of spinach and the right to arm bears.

You can get 'food flasks' that you could use for soup or for stews, currys, mince, pasta in sauce etc.0

You could make some cornish style pasties or just mixed veg pasties that they could have cold in their lunchboxes.
Cheap fillings could include;
- Cheap beef mince/small amount of nicer beef mince with onions, carrots, potato, swede etc
- Cheese and fried onions mixed with mashed potato
- Various vegetables seasoned with spices/curry powder
- Caramelised onions, thyme or dried mixed herbs, goats cheese(if reasonabley priced
- Leftover chicken curry
- Leftover beef chilli, maybe with some grated cheese
- Bolognaise sauce, maybe with chunks of cheap mozzarella.September Grocery Challenge £0/£2250 -

Hope you find it useful, i definitely did!!0 -
How about cold pizza? Tesco value pizzas are 99p and I would think you'd only need one between two. Top it with whatever veg/cooked meats you have handy. Would be even cheaper to make a big batch of home made pizza dough, which you could also use for calzones too.
I love cold pasta salad and find that really filling and there are loads of variations.
Or how about a bagel instead of sandwiches? I find them more filling than sliced bread.:DYummy mummy, runner, baker and procrastinator0 -

I posted this some time back on the 'Five Pleasures' thread. It's one of those meals that does us half (hot) one evening and half (cold) the next lunchtime and we find it filling. We don't eat meat but I should think it could be padded out with bits of meat as well as more chopped veg and maybe an extra egg to bind them.
The basic recipe for Eggy, Cheesy, Potato Pie goes like this (based on a recipe by H.Ladell, I think):
1.25 Kg potatoes
A small tin of sweet corn (original recipe had frozen peas but we prefer corn)
2 large chopped onions
butter
5 eggs
150ml milk
200g grated cheese
herbs, salt and pepper if you want
6- 8 slices of tomato to decorate the top (optional)
I butter the 12"ish x 9"ish oven proof dish we have that fits these quantities well.
Steam the potatoes until cooked, let them cool and cut them into smallish cubes/chunks, fry the onions in some butter until soft then add them and the sweet corn/thawed peas or whatever other veggie bits or herbs you are adding to the cooked potatoes and gently mix them all together in the ovenproof dish.
Beat the eggs and milk together with the seasoning and pour onto the veg mix together with about half of the grated cheese. Turn everything over again in the dish until it's mixed enough, level off the surface and top with the rest of the cheese and tomato slices for decoration.
Bake at 220 degrees or so for about 40 mins.
I think it was meant to provide 8 portions. In our house (with 2 starving teenage boys) it does 6! We serve it with green veg or salad. It's also good the next day cold, keeps it's shape in slices and so does lunchboxes too.
Best wishes

As a bloke that eats like a horse and will eat anything..I love pasta, cook it night before and when cold add diced cheese (stronger the better) nuts, dried fruit, peppers, spring onions, (or anything else left over in fridge that looks edible)..THE SHABBY SHABBY FOUNDER0
