Redirecting Emails from closed account

Hi,
I have just recently cancelled my email account with virgin in which I have 30 days to redirect my emails to another account.
Is there an easier and quicker way to do this than having to contact everyone that send emails to me?

The only people that could automatically redirect emails aimed at one address to an alternative are those controlling the DNS MX records for the original account - ie Virgin. Whether or not it is a service they offer I don't know so you'd need to ask them. I doubt that it is.

When you set up your next email account don't use your ISP or you'll have the same problem again if you move in the future. Either settle for a plain googlemail, hotmail, etc. freebie or purchase either a domain and redirect the mails to one of those freebies or go the whole hog and buy your own personalised email account with your own domain name.

It takes about 5 mins to send a group email to everyone in your contacts book.

The problem isn't that simple to fix - you need to change the email address in the various online accounts you've set up too. That can be quite a lot.
  • The other problem is that no matter how many emails you send out to your contacts asking them to use the new address and remove the old one from their address book......an number will be incapable of doing this and will then have the nerve to claim it's your fault when their subsequent emails to your old address never appear.

True, but the OP will have to do that anyway now they've got 30 days notice on the account.
Just reinforces your own point about never tying yourself to an ISP-related email address. Googlemail every time for me.

Can also be a good way to get rid of some tedious contacts then...

Usually this is mainly discussion forums so you don't actually need to change your details as long as you don't forget your password. The sites only check the email is real and valid when you first sign up, after that they're not bothered. If you forget your password though, you're in trouble as you won't be able to recover or reset it as it will send the details to your closed account.

It's also worth mentioning that it's a very good idea to have your own website/domain and create yourself an email address on that, eg. your site is https://www.snooze.com and you set up an email address rob@snooze.com, for example. Using this method for your email serves two purposes - 1. you never have to worry about having to change it whenever you change ISP and 2. you won't suffer from the increasing discussion forum problem of "you cannot use a free email provider when signing up, it must be an ISP address", which means you can't use a gmail address. What they say is not strictly correct though as you can sign-up to forums using a non-ISP address such as you@yourowndomain.com - it's just the free email providers they don't like as these are the ones the spammers use.

Although it'll cost you a few quid per month for your own domain and hosting, most people these days have a website or blog of some sort hosted on a free site which you have no control over, so for the sake of a couple of quid per month you can bring the whole lot in-house and give your website/blog and proper domain name, plus also set up as many permanent email addys as you like.

    :)

Have you tried using gmail ?

I imported emails into my gmail account from my hotmail one.

I believe gmail can do this for other accounts like Virgin via POP3/SMTP etc.

You will be able to logon a webmail and setup an auto-forward but that will only last until the account is closed. You may be better off importing all emails and setting up an auto-reply with the new address.

you'll just have to email each personal contact and tell them of hte change.
If you get any newsletters or other automated emails then you'll have to use their sites to update your address.
Virgin Net don't divert emails (30 day's after account closes they will bounce.)

So tell the ones you know to change and remind them in 29 days, and again a week later using the new address :D lol

otherwise check to see if the Virgin "pay as you go" is still running signup for that with your virgin username, then you can keep your Virgin.net address for a further 4 or 5 months so you can pound away at the lazy people that don't update their email addresses! lol
