Vodafone scam or genuine?

Hi

I sent an e-mail to Vodafone earlier today asking on what date I can upgrade my phone.

I got this reply -

Hello Kerry,

You can upgrade your contract when you are in the last 50 days of your commitment period or the after commitment gets over.

I am unable to open and check your account as the date of birth and address provided by you in your email does not match the information on your account. I request you to provide me with the following information so that I can help you further:
  • The 1st and 2nd digit of your PIN code.
  • The payment method on your account.
Once I receive your response I will be happy to check your account and help you further.
You also need to provide me with a scanned copy of your birth certificate as an email attachment so that I can update the correct date of birth on your account.
You can also fax the copy of your birth certificate to us on 08701 616 500.
I also request you to provide me with your correct address.
I look forward to your reply.

Kind regards,

Do you think this is genuine? Asking for a fax or scan of my birth certificate seems strange!

Also I know for sure I gave the correct address date of birth I might have gotten wrong as it is drop down menu but Im pretty sure it was correct.

I did send them an e-mail so it makes sense that I get a reply, but it just seems weird that some of the writing was in bold some not and that they expect me to send scans of personal documents through the internet.

Also I do not even have a birth certificate. I have a passport so I could show that if Vodafone truely do need the information but Im feeling wary about this.

Any advice anyone?

Definitely looks a scam to me.You should never give details of your PIN to ANYONE!
Think about it.Did they need all that when you opened your account with them? I'm guessing no.

Definitely a scam, you should advise vodafone.
  • I think when they say pin they meant my vodafone pin possibly as they do ask for that when you submit a contact form.

How on earth did they know that I had contacted vodafone today though asking about an upgrade? I feel very worried now incase someone is able to see what Im doing online.
  • I think that this is probably genuine. The number they have asked you to fax the copy of your birth certificate to is listed on vodfones website as the fax number for their disability services customer services department http://online.vodafone.co.uk/dispatch/Portal/appmanager/vodafone/wrp?_nfpb=true&_pageLabel=template11&pageID=CS_0001.

You are correct that they will be asking for your vodafone pin and not your bank pin.

Are you trying to cancel a contract, it looks like the sort of information vodafone would request before dealing with any request.
  • no I am not trying to cancel them I just asked if they could tell me how long I have to wait untill I can request a handset upgrade.

Remember the OP *DID* ask for an upgrade this is not an out of the blue scam email.

The birth certificate is to update the date wrongly on file nit to upgrade the contract.

Personally, I don't think it is a scam. Think about it, someone emails Vodafone asking for details of a mobile phone account. In the email, they give a different date of birth AND a different address to those held on file. Vodafone would have to check whether or not the request was genuine, and they're perfectly within their rights to ask for hard copy evidence.

Not having a birth certificate is not an excuse either. There are so many places where a birth certificate is asked for identity purposes. You should get a certified copy from the Registrar. Whether you still have to apply to the Registrar's office where you were born, or whether you can now get them from any Registrar is something you'll need to check.
