MSE News: Nationwide limits overseas withdrawals for cash card holders

will-in-estoril asks why Nationwide should subsidise those who only use them once a year. The point is that for a long time now the free withdrawal of money abroad has been their main selling point to lure customers in so why should anyone be surprised or complain that we joined just for this benefit? It certainly wasn't for the interest rates on their savings accounts!! I don't think anyone cares about loyalty to their bank nowadays - we all just have to get the best deal we can for ourselves.
I think this is another step towards the end of the facility for full account holders. The rot started when they started to charge for out of Europe withdrawals. It is hard on people like my student daughter who has a part time job but not sufficient income to pass the credit check and relies on using this card when travelling. I do hope Nationwide think again as it seems incredibly mean to do this. Also how do you know if you suddenly lose this facility halfway through your holiday. It is kind of them to time this for June to Sept, the main holiday period!!0 -

The timings are even more annoying for me - they reissued me with a new cash card two weeks ago with an expiry date of March 2012. The following week they write to me saying they are going to cancel this card sometime this summer - and issue me with the new card. They really should give people a firm date - and not reissue them during the summer holiday period which will cause maximum inconvenience!
Very inefficient!0 -

The timings couldn't be worse for us either, we are going to Tunisia in September and my wife has been told she is getting the cashcard + we are not happy as she gets paid the day after we fly out so will not be able to access her money as there is not a lot of call for using a debit card in Tunisia. We fully accept the reasons for her being downgraded from flex account to cashcard, before all the self rightcheous (spelling) jump on the band wagon and she has paid dearly for the mistake. Personally I think this is just another case of Banks and Building Societies making the rules up as they go along, my wife does not use the internet or mail order stuff so this card to us is absolutly useless compared to the old Cash Card.I hate football and do wish people wouldn't keep talking about it like it's the most important thing in the world0 -

Plenty of notice, ok, but we'd booked and paid for (in full) the holiday long before Nationwide notified us of the 'fantactic, not' new cash card plus, personaly we'd rather have the ability to with draw overseas than the debit card facility, I guess like us there will be a lot of people moving to banks that offer basic accounts that allow overseas ATM use.I hate football and do wish people wouldn't keep talking about it like it's the most important thing in the world0 -
All this talk of downgrading Flex Account customers is a bit worrying. I've got a Flex Account purely for foreign travel - I opened it last year before I went to Australia.
I've not had any contact from them regarding and no notification that anything is changing so I presume I am ok? I only transfer money to it when I am going abroad, but I do use their credit card as my main credit card.0 -
I had a leaflet through about cashcard plus being issued soon quite a few months ago when this all began, but not had it yet. I'm going abroad on the 5th for 4 days, does this mean my current cash card will still work abroad? Bit nervous to risk it but also don't want to be carrying €400!
Edit: I just read through the Nationwide website and it talked of cards being set out between July and September, and then further information saying they've been delayed until the end of July...not ideal timing! I've contacted Nationwide to clarify if my card will be usable on the dates that I am abroad, hopefully they will reply.0 -

This is a worry for us as well, with no exact date on when the card will arrive what is the timescale between the new card arriving in the post and the old card being cancelled, if the new card arrives while you are away would you suddernly find yourself with no access to your bank account? Surely it would have been better to introduce the cards over the winter when far fewer people will find it a problem. Funny how they planned this to coincide with the busiest time for poeple traveling abroad on holiday.I hate football and do wish people wouldn't keep talking about it like it's the most important thing in the world0 -

I've just spoken to Nationwide; they told me "they've just started issuing the cards now" but "the cashcard will continue to work for 21 days after the receipt of the new card so there is no problem for my current trip from 5th to 8th August, but any future trips, I will need to use a different card".
Still a little nervous of having no access to money but I think I'll risk it and take a hit on another card if this fails.0 -

The loophole was good for those who had secondary accounts whilst it lasted, but like most loopholes, they get closed sooner or later.
My wife has been a Natiowide customer for about 25 years, in that time she has also been a Nationwide credit card holder and had Nationwide mortgage, she never defaulted on the mortgage and only ever made one late payment on the credit card (hadn't realised that at the time it took 7 working days to transfer funds from Nationwide current account to a Nationwide Credit Card Account) She was downgraded in about 2001 due to a bit of sillyness and that is the only time she has ever had any credit problems, we have tried the uprade back to full account but they won't do it, I guess because she just doesn't have enough funds paid into the account as she only works part time.
We feel we are being punished for the greed of those who just opened Nationwide Basic accounts so they wouldn't have to pay for withdrawels abroad, why Nationwide didn't just introduce charging rather than take the action they did is beyond me, talk about make the rules up as they go along.I hate football and do wish people wouldn't keep talking about it like it's the most important thing in the world0 -
