Ohhh, i'm doing the same this year, but i don't know what paint you use on the tyre?? Gloss? Masonry? Emulsion?? Help please!!

I googled this a while back and read that you should use exterior oil-based gloss paint. but clean the tyres with sugar soap first to get all the road gunk/grease off. This seems to have worked fairly well in my garden, though it was quite cold when we painted the tyres and the paint hasn't dried all that well. Just giving the spuds a few more days to chit before planting. My first time doing this, it's very exciting!

Wouldn't cotton bags rot and break when they've got wet? I had a set of 3 'patio planters', beige polypropylene bags with handles, and every handle broke after a season's use - bad enough if you're just wanting to move them sideways, but even worse tipping them into a barrow to find your potatoes (or is there a better way of getting them out??)

Do you put stones in the bottom, doesn't the compost wash out through the drainage holes otherwise? I did potatoes in buckets with holes drilled in, and a layer of gravel, but they stayed very soggy, and were very heavy too :(

The planters aren't usually the expensive bit, it's the compost to go in them!

Why I don't bother putting potatoes in containers any more.
But its the satisfaction of growing your own that does it for me:j

What's the best compost for growing potatoes in, and do they need feeding?
