Hi Last year we got hold of some old tyres, painted the outsides white, planted the potatoes in one tyre and then when we added more soil to cover (sorry forgot technical term!) added another tyre on top for the extra height. Worked fantastically well and was easy to get at potatoes when ready. Will be doing the same again this year but with an extra few tyres in the row!

Ohhh, i'm doing the same this year, but i don't know what paint you use on the tyre?? Gloss? Masonry? Emulsion?? Help please!!

  • Poundworld have natural jute shopping bags (sacking?) 2 for £1 which would do, and their natural colour wouldnt look out of place in the garden, but I would be worried that maybe they wouldnt be dark enough.

You can also get a large growbag (B&Q) cut it in half across the middle, take each half and stand it on its end, take out some compost and roll down the edges like a cuff. plant a couple of spuds then cover, when they start to sprout earth up by adding more compost and unrolling the sides.
  • Ask at your local gravel/agragate supplier (jewsons etc) for old/damaged/ holey gravel bags (they will only throw them away). We had 4 tonnes of gravel delievered and they left the gravel bags (these are about 3ft x 3ft x about 2ft high), we made some holes in the bottom and filled them up! We got about 10 seed potatos in each and they worked really well!

TY Travelling Abuela. What the process for planting potatoes in these?

Poke some drainage holes in the bottom. Fill about a third full of compost, I used 3 seed potatoes per bag, as the foliage grows keep earthing up until you get to the top of the bag.

  • try an old bin - works perfectly as long as you make some holes in the bottom

The planters aren't usually the expensive bit, it's the compost to go in them!

Why I don't bother putting potatoes in containers any more.

Poundland are selling large green plastic garden bags so got a couple of them and will see how i get on with them.
If they dont work then its only a couple of quid lost.;)

I'm using morrison's black flower buckets; you get 8+ for 99p (I got 15 last time!). Depends how many you have to plant though as I think you can only really get one tuber in each bucket, so if you're wanting a lot they may start to take up lots of space.
