If this is a shared drain (not just from your property) then most likely it is the water company's responsibility to clear it, not yours.
Make sure neighbours on both sides are not affected before you pay for it yourselves. No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -
The water company have caled me back, a man is coming to look at it tomorrow to see if it's our problem or theirs. Fingers crossed it's in the road and therefore the water companys problem !
If it's in the main sewer line out in the road, then other houses upstream will be affected too.No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -
we had a problem when we moved into a new house and our very new neighbours stumped up half of the £140 this was about 7yrs ago, they thought it was caused by their v small child who had a bit of a thing for flushing toys down the downstairs loo!!! It was rankGo hopefully into each new day, enjoy something from every day no matter how small, you never know when it will be your last0

Make sure you turn the rods clockwise ( the same way as you tighten them up). You should be able to clear by starting from a clear manhole and working upstream. If this does not work go to the next manhole up ( the blocked one).0

My drain was blocked in the summer - it was full - I believe it was caused by next door - I remember noticiing that they had drain cleaning company there previously. (The house next door to them had a lot of building work, including the demolition of the outside loo) I am renovating so living at my parents, so hadnt noticed it immediately, but on the upside, I didnt have a bathroom, so there wasn't a backlog of 'waste', it was earth and stone, some of them pretty large - tennis ball size.
I used some thick plastic sacks, rubber gloves and a shovel to clear the bulk, then a trowel to clean more. I borrowed someones rods to clean the interconnecting pipes and downstream to the main sewer, then, plenty and plenty of water to flush the system.
I took the bags to the council tip once they'd dried off.
Good luck.0 -
I think council also do this I seen them on tv programs like life of crime or something, not sure how much they charge0

HI there, I posted a thread a week or so ago regarding water under my floorboards which on investigation was caused by a manhole blocked between my house and next door, shared driveway.I agree with many above regarding using drain rods to try to clear first, I did this and it solved the problem which had been caused by the neighbours flushing baby wipes and face wipes ( they don't dissolve). Rather than buying a set you could always hire them, for approximately £10.All I ask is the chance to prove that money can't make me happy...

hire them? i dont think so!
a mini set of four rods cost 7 quid and a full set of 12 rods cost 17 quid.Get some gorm.0 -
Well the waterboard man came today, very nice & helpful.
He showed me a map on the pc of the sewars and which direction to prod the drain rods.
Borrowed/lent ( sorry to the grammar police, I never know the difference!!) some drain rods off a friend so will have a jab at it tomorrow.
Thanks for all your advice xxx:money: Martin Lewis Rocks!:money:0 -
For information. You borrow from and you lend to.I can afford anything that I want.
Just so long as I don't want much.0
