but stealing from Boots which was probably a luxury item?!

Equally, it could've been a packet of nappies, or jar of baby food. Who knows.

The OP is a right idiot for doing this - and s/he seems to know it - but I don't think the whole of MSE needs to be reminded that stealing is wrong.

I detest shoplifting. I don't think it's justifiable even to feed your kids (there are so many alternatives to theft, nobody should starve in this country). But seriously...get over it.

Where is the abuse that you said everyone is posting?

Think you find my posts arent abusive, and are fact, after being in the security field for many years. And training security staff/companies and shopping centres on retail loss.

In fairness, if everybody was honest and did not shoplift surely you and all secutiry people would be out of a job eh.:rotfl::rotfl:

she may get a letter through her door very shortly if the shop from where she stole has a 'civil recovery scheme' in operation.

And what exactly will they be trying to recover?

And what exactly will they be trying to recover?

So do you really think that a civil recovery scheme only attempts to retrieve the losses of the actual cost of the item(s) stolen?

Think about the question you have asked. Do you think the loss of goods stolen from a shop is the only cost incurred by the retailer when a thief decides to help themselves?

By virtue of being caught shoplifting, obviously the goods stolen in most cases would have been recovered but there are additional 'fees' that may or may not be charged to the offender.

Civil Recovery is the use of Civil Law remedies to reclaim directly from an offender committing a theft, including the costs associated with the prevention and investigation of such acts. Civil Recovery used in addition to - independent of - any criminal action. There are 75 major retailers in the National Civil Recovery Programme including ASDA, Tesco, Sainsbury, HMV, Bhs, Debenhams, B&Q and Boots the Chemist. Any company can join the programme as long as they can meet its quality requirements. The most likely amount demanded from a customer thief is between £60 and £150.

  • Shops do not prosecute, this is done by the Crown Prosecution Service if there is sufficient evidence to take a person to court and a reasonable chance of securing a conviction. For this process to begin a person has to be arrested, interviewed and charged by the Police. Most custody suites have CPS staff working in them to advise the Police as to the possibilty of conviction.

Well, I gave my opinion, shop lifting is damn right wrong. Even if it was something essential like the nappies or the babyfood it is still wrong, same as with the Bread but only then could I start to give a little bit of understanding for it.

What other things can MSE people say apart from the truth - shes landed herself into a lot of hot water.

"Get over it" well you seem to be enjoying posting about this - you have your opinion.. we have ours.

You're completely entitled to your opinion, it's just as valid as anyone else's...I wasn't attacking you for having one. Merely commenting on the assumption that the stolen item must've been a luxury item, just because it was from Boots.

That goes above and beyond opinion, into the realms of speculation. Which I find to be one of the more disappointing aspects of MSE. I like this site a lot, and don't necessarily want it to be all sharey and carey, but two dozen threads basically re-confirming what the OP already knows aren't all that helpful.

By the way, where's Anihilator these days?!? He/she would have had the OP sentenced to death by now ;)

So they can demand a payment from a person who hasn't been found guilty of a crime? dont make me laugh, its just the same as parking fines.

I'm not sure how well that argument will stand up in court.

We are demanding this money even though we had insufficient evidence to prosecute you :rotfl:
  • Thank you all for your opinions! it was very helpful. Believe me this experience has affected me so much that I cant eat, sleep or even think of shopping! I am so stupid and I will never forget this.:( I work for a big retail brand so they have lots of other shops around the city, also security has told me that they will wait for the respond from the head office so I may get back but I dont think I wish to get back. It is so embarassing and I am not a thief even though it's hard to believe but I am not, even my manager said she will say just good words about me to HRM because I have good perfomance records and I was never a problematic person. I may lose the job, which is not the end of the world, because I am a student and have other experiences besides retail. I am really happy to learn that it won't show on CRB! :) Also, I am still waiting from civil recovery and I am ready to pay the penalty no matter how big it is!

    Thank you all once again!
