My daughter has just received a new computer, and until now all her music for her IPOD has been on my computer. Is there anyone who can tell me how to transfer her music to her new computer, without the risk of losing all the songs (over 1500!) Thank you very much for your help.

If the songs are on the ipod already then she can just upload them to her computer I think."She is quite the oddball. Did you notice how she didn't even get excited when she saw this original ZX-81?"

Unfortunately not so easy.
Search google for an ipod file manager... try that.
Unless there is one, then there is no chance im afraid. The songs are split up and encoded with different names and mixed up into random folders. In other words if you wanted to find a song you don't have a chance!
The reason for this is to stop ipods being connected to different computers.
A file manager may list all the songs and let you transfer them so give that a try"The internet is a great way to get on the net."

I recommend Anapod explorer
Its got a backup program built in and is far better than Itunes, its called Anapod CopyGear. I bought it last April and upgraded to a universal version to I can use it on more than one Ipod mini
Make sure you get the right version. It cost me £14 something and then £4 I think for universal version paid via Paypal
The copy is brill for backup on to pc. The differences between Itunes and anapod are here
I just repaired Ipod on Friday as I lost all the tracks and got them back with the repair function, panic over. I backup files to a portable HD0 -

If you are using Itunes to transfer music to your ipod, it all depends on how you have set it up in the first place.
My Itunes is set up to put all music into a\music folder, where all of the files can be easily found.
Transfering them to another pc is simply a matter of copying that folder across the network (or on to somes cds / dvds ) to another pc.
Itunes is then set up to look in that folder and there they are.
I know it works, I have 4 pc's all with the same setup.0 -

That is a VERY biased and stupid link.
A lot of the functions in itunes are similar but a little different and i quote, it would say "no can do"
For example:
Anapod: Rename Categories Right-click on any Artist, Album, or Genre to rename all tracks in that category. For example, update your Puff Daddy tracks to P.Diddy with one click.
Itunes: No can do.
With itunes you can highlight as many songs as you want and change the name of artist. Or even better you can click on the space where the artist is and type it in there. You dont even have to right click!!!
I wouldnt buy that software using that review as its too biased and not a clear comparison sheet.
EDIT
I have noticed.. anapod and itunes are COMPLETLEY unrelated software!!! Itunes is media management and this anapod is a file explorer type utility.. example:
Anapod: Copy and Paste If you prefer, you can "Copy" files in My Computer and "Paste" them to your iPod.
Itunes: Can't.
That is absolutely absurd as itunes AUTO downloads new music in itunes onto your ipod OR you can drag and drop the files you want onto your ipod!!!!!!! If one uses itunes this is easier than messing about copying and pasting media files!"The internet is a great way to get on the net."

Wasn't the original question - how to get the music on to the new pc ?
Simply transfer the files over using whatever means you have.
Then configure iTunes to look for them and see the ipod.
You may have to reload the files on to the ipod when this has been done.
If you have downloaded files from iTunes, you can play them on up to 5 computers.
Make sure that you do not erase them from the original pc unti lall is ok on the new one.
Like previously stated, I have transfered my music to 3 other pc's so that the children can load their ipods as they wish.0 -
You can do it a number of ways:
If the iPod isn't too full
1) Plug in the iPod, make sure iTunes doesn't launch.
2) It'll show up as a removable drive in My Computer
3) Go to where the music is on your machine, select it all and copy it
4) Go to My Computer, double click on the iPod drive, create a folder within it, paste all the music from the hard drive on your pc
5) Plug the iPod into the other PC
6) It'll show up as a removable drive
7) Just go into the drive and copy all the music from the folder (as per above) onto the other machine.
If you're PC's are networked
You can file share the music, and just copy it from PC to PC. If this is possible, and you aren't sure how to do so, just post back.
If the music is on the iPod and you need to get it off
Use an iPod file manager. Anapod as mentioned above is very good. For free alternatives, google YamiPod or EphPod. iTunes won't allow you to copy tracks from the iPod back onto your computer.MercilessKiller wrote:That is absolutely absurd as itunes AUTO downloads new music in itunes onto your ipod OR you can drag and drop the files you want onto your ipod!!!!!!! Anapod is a very good piece of software, it's by no means a biased link. I personally use Rockbox on my iPod so can just drag and drop music via Windows Explorer.
It's not as automated as iTunes, but
a) I know what's going on, and I control what's going on,
b) I don't have to install iTunes, which in my opinion is quite a resource hog (bloated), and doesn't do anything that other great player like Winamp or foobar2000 don't, or didn't do originally.
c) iTunes has on previous occassions, namely formatting my iPod, done so without asking me.
If you really want to get close to iTunes, just use Winamp and the ml_ipod plugin. Winamp uses about a 1/4 of the resources, loads faster, and is far more functional and customizable."Boonowa tweepi, ha, ha."0 -
Ok that's fair enough. My argument was that anapod was being compared to itunes.. which is like comparing windows to a motherboard as far as i'm concerned. Both pieces of hardware but different functions."The internet is a great way to get on the net."

Sorry didn't mean to come across agressively. Yeah totally. iTunes provides a full media center experience. You can buy music, manage your music, manage your iPod.
Anapod, is just a basic way of putting/managing music on your iPod without the need for additional software. Ok, so it is actually 3rd part software itself, but it integrates into Windows Explorer.
I guess it depends upon your preference. I personally think all mp3's players shouldn't need 3rd party software to run. It should be an option. I like my Ipod with Rockbox on it, as I can take it to any computer and drag and drop music onto it, there's no need to have iTunes installed."Boonowa tweepi, ha, ha."0
