iPod help - new laptop

Options
I've just got a new laptop so installed iTunes and connected up my iPod. I hoped this would bring all the songs on the iPod over to the new laptop hard drive but when I choose the iPod in iTunes nothing shows. Is there something I have to do to bring them over from the iPod or do I have to copy all the tracks from the CD's again?

Just had exactly the same problem.

This is what you have to do:-
    • Open your ipod using windows explorer
    • in the tools menu select folder options
    • then click the view tab
    • part way down is a hidden folder options
    • make sure the show hidden files and folders is selected and click apply
    • you should now see an extra folder in your ipod called ipod control
    • Click on this folder to open it
    • you will now see a folder called Music
    • now drag and drop this folder to your desktop
    • when this has finished copying the files across open itunes
    • under the file option in the menu select add folder
    • choose desktop and it should copy all the files to your lib
    • if you have not authorised this computer you will need to log into itunes for it to be authorised or it wont let you play downloaded stuff

NB Make sure you have itunes organise your music folders. once you are happy that all the files are in your lib, (Check they have been copied into the directory and not just linked can be set up under the options) you can then sync with your ipod. It will overwrite all you existing stuff on your ipod.

    Good luck

They don't want you using your Ipod with more than one computer so you're not supposed to be able to copy music from your Ipod to another computer.

Fortunately there are dozens of ways to get them onto a computer. The simplist is to drag the music over as mentioned above - But because Ipods rename music with their own filenames, all the filenames will weird.

will let you get music off your Ipod with filenames. It doesn't need to be installed. You can even put it in your Ipods disk and then you can access and play your Ipod with any computer that doesn't have Itunes

Yes that's because Itunes reads the ID3 tags. I mean the actual filename of each songs get changed.

Doesn't really matter if you intend to use Itunes to manage everything, but if you actually have to find the physical file on your hard drive you'll find a lot of files called BEDZ.mp3, IOXQ.mp3 etc

    :)
