Because otherwise the taxpayer would have to support you, including all the people on minimum wage. If you can afford your own flat at university (as opposed to a room in a shared house) then clearly you don't need your parents support. As you say you are an adult so you have the opportunity to earn your own money and budget to live within your means.
I should rephrase. I have a shared flat with 4 others. Next year (thank god) moving into a shared house with 2 others.
I just about manage in terms of budget, but its not a good budget. After rent I am left with around about £30 a week to cover food, toiletries, cleaning materials etc, as well as course books. Take food off at approx £10-£15 per week I've got £15.
No I don't spend it all on going out, but I don't think its fair that just because my parents earn some money to pay their bills, that I should be forced to feel guilty when I go to the cinema once a month, compared to some little brats I know (one house mate in particular) who's parents are on benefits (long story short they don't deserve them, by her own joyous admission) so she gets a full loan and spends it on getting drunk.0 -
Can you not ask your parents for money or get a part-time job? Working full-time over the summer might help too.Sealed pot challenge #232. Gold stars from Sue-UU - :staradmin :staradmin £75.29 banked

My parents can't afford to support me. I have a younger sister who they look after, and they send me food when they can.
I'm working full time this summer to pay my rent. It's given me a slight boost this year but not alot. Will keep me out of the overdraft though till bursaries
Part time jobs - I tried to get one at teh start of the year and have since tried but now given in as I finish for Easter. Thankfully got a few days work over easter which will top me up £1000 -
If your parents have income of 54,000 and choose not to give you any financial support I would be angry with them and not with the system!0

My parents give me the financial support they can, which tbh isnt alot. They've got their own money problems without having to bail me out. THey send me food every now and again and some shopping vouchers when they can.
I should also explain my Dad's income is HEAVILY subsidised by overtime which is not guranteed. This years been a good year so he's made more than usual. My mum has onyl just gone on full time from part time so theres a boost there.
Oldernotwiser - Why should they ahve to support me? Just because they work hard and earn money, why should they have to give me anything? I'm nearly 21 so I've been an adult now for nearly 3 years. Now, honestly without the moeny I get from the gov i couldn't come to uni, but it's a tight ship and it annoys me that some people, just because their parents are too lazy to work (or whatever) get a free ride.
Not generalising because I know some people need the full loan to survive here at uni because of real issues, but I also know alot who use it as a free ride.0 -

Why should tax payers have to pay for you to go to university?it annoys me that some people, just because their parents are too lazy to work (or whatever) get a free ride.
Thank you. It's not my mum's fault that she'd had her hours cut by 40 per month. And yes, I do get (almost) full grant and loan.Sealed pot challenge #232. Gold stars from Sue-UU - :staradmin :staradmin £75.29 banked

Sh1305 - If you read beneath my message I did say I have no issue with that

I have the issue with some people who seem to take advantage of the so called free ride.
And in terms of tax payers paying for us to go to uni, why shoul they pay for any of us? because thats the system. I'm not saying it's perfect, but its a system. Like has been said before, its not perfect but no one else can fix it just yet.0
