I know to be an independant student its 3 years self supporting. But my qualm is that why should my parents have to fund me, just because I lived with them until I went to university. I don't live with them while I am at uni as I have my own flat, I pay my own bills, transport, food etc. I'm 21 (in october) so legally an adult and they really have no obligation to give me a penny.

Your parents don't have to fund you; you may be assessed on their income but that doesn't mean they have to give you anything and many parents don't.
  • My exact point though. Why should we be assessed on their income? Case example, I've got a frien who's parents are extremly well off, she gets no maintenance grant and only has the basic loan which just covers her accom and gives her about £5 a week to spare. Her parents give her nothing so she is survives on her over draft.

It just seems a bizzare system. I've been told it contineus to post grad as well! so I'll be 22 and assessed on their income????? BIZARRE! Oh well. hoping to send off the new docs on monday once we find them

Yes, the system is unfair, but they need to do something.

Postgrads don't get any real state-funding, unless doing one of the exempted courses. Research council funding is not based on income.
  • I'm going in for PGCE which I have been told is funded and I will have access to a student loan, bursary and the other stuff that comse with it.

Give me the income details for the 08/09 tax year, I'll do the assessment properly for you.
  • Thank you for the kind offer Taiko.

We believe the amount to be approx £54,000 for 08/09.

I have 1 sister age 15 still in full time education who obviously my parents look after.

In my first year so 2008/09 I got standard loan of £3849, and a grant of £776.

In second year 2009/10 I got a standard loan of £4003 and a grant of £742.

I was expecting to get similar figures for 2010/11 for 3rd year.

Ok, for an 08/09 starter, you're looking at the following on a £54k income.

    £54,000 - £1,300 (Sister) = £52,700

    (£34,459 - £25,000) / £5.89 = £1614

    (£52,700 - £34,450) / £20.59 = £886

    £2906 (Max Grant) - (£1614 + £886) = £406 grant payable 10/11

Crud so it looks like we must have gone up to the next band :S I'm confuddled about all the numbers though? So that means i'll get the standard loan (whatever that is this year) plus the grant so i might be looking at a cut of around £400 (i think if i've got my numbers)

If you take that grant figure off the loan rate you're entitled to, that'll give you your loab for the year.

Because otherwise the taxpayer would have to support you, including all the people on minimum wage. If you can afford your own flat at university (as opposed to a room in a shared house) then clearly you don't need your parents support. As you say you are an adult so you have the opportunity to earn your own money and budget to live within your means.
