SLC Issues

SLC = PAINS IN THE !!!!!!!! I got the following email today and am baffled as to why!

They haven't been in contact with either of my parents (I'm 20 going into 3rd year) to ask for details. I didn't need to submit any data this year other than the original application for support for my 2nd year.

Anyone else had this message? Got any advice?

Assessment Deadline Approaching - Academic Year 2010/11
Dear Samantha *****
You indicated on your application that you wish to apply for student finance based on your household income. However, we cannot determine your full entitlement until we receive all of the necessary financial evidence.
We are still:

  • Awaiting Sponsor 1 Details
  • Awaiting Sponsor 2 Details
We have contacted them separately to request this.
We will process your application without using your financial information in 28 days, so that you have some student finance in place to begin your course.

Important, please note:

  • If your sponsor(s) have already submitted the evidence requested then please disregard this e-mail.
  • You will only receive the minimum student finance available if you do not return financial evidence.
  • You still have time to send us financial evidence so we can calculate your full entitlement. If we receive all the requested evidence in good time then we will process your application as fully financially assessed.
  • If you don't return the evidence in time we will process your application without taking into account your household income. We will then carry out a full financial assessment at a later date and issue you with notification of this. Any difference between this and your previous assessment will be paid to you as quickly as possible.
For further information relating to student finance, please visit our website or call us on 0845 300 5090.

Give the information that is being requested? It's needed.
  • Taiko - I don't know what they want. They've just asked for sponsor details? Now they recieved these 2 years ago when I applied for my first year of course.
I applied about this time last year for my 2nd year funding, had no issues went straight through and they didnt need to get anything cause they said they already had it.
This year I'm baffled to what they want. they've not contacted either of my parents to ask for anythign. They've just sent me this one email. Not helpful really

The system got changed last year, they moved the tax year they required income from back a year.

So when you started in 2008 they used 07/08 income. Then they changed it so they used the year befores. So in 2009 they used 07/08 income again so nothing needed to be provided as they already had it. This year they are using the year befores as well so they need the 08/09 income which they won't already have and therefore your parents need to provide.
  • Thanks for that info. Now worried becaue I think we might havbe gone over the bracket into the next higher bracket cause my Dad got a small pay increase :S

Does anyone know the bands for the student finance/know how to work out possible entitlement

Would have been nice of them to actually contact my parents though they havent emaild or nothing

Which year did you beging your course, and had you studied at degree level prior to that?
  • Hi Taiko
I began my course in September 2008. I went straight from college to university (I'm only 20, going 21 in October) so have never done a degree before this one.

What I cant understand (slight OT) is why at nearly 21 they think my parents should support me? Bizarre!
  • Probably because you havent shown evidence of supporting yourself. You moved straight from college to University in the majority of cases this would suggest you were supported(living at parents) up till the date you left to goto university.

Where do you go live duing summer holidays?

Unless household income is over £60,000, should still get a grant.

Because you fulfill none of the criteria for being assessed as an independent student.
  • Hiya,

Taiko - I know i'll get some grant but what i mean is I think we've moved from one bracket to the next as my dad got a small pay rise.

Studentfor life - Last year I lived at home but I pay rent at home like a lodger and contribute to the food bills etc. This year hopefully I am going to stay where I am in the house we've just had confirmed for my 3rd year, if i can find work here anyways.

I know to be an independant student its 3 years self supporting. But my qualm is that why should my parents have to fund me, just because I lived with them until I went to university. I don't live with them while I am at uni as I have my own flat, I pay my own bills, transport, food etc. I'm 21 (in october) so legally an adult and they really have no obligation to give me a penny.
