Just had a very plausible guy on the phone to tell me that my Sky equipment warranty is about to run out and this is a courtesy call so that I can get it all sorted if I just give him my bank details.
a haven't ever taken the additional warranty
b wouldn't give my bank details over the phone anyway
So is this a scam or is this dodgy practice by Sky, he hung really quickly when I challenged him.

Saw something about a scam like this a few years ago. Its a company who pretend to be sky but offer "insurance" on your sky equipment that isn't worth the paper its written on. Charge you a monthly fee and are very hard to cancel with/get money back from.
They ring loads of numbers in hopes of hitting some who actually have sky.

I had the same call a few months ago informing me that my warranty was about to run out, when i told him it ran out 10 years ago he said he was sorry and hung up.0

I got that the other day, was told that now I own my sky equipment I am liable for repairs. Only had Sky for 2 months, I thought I would be covered for the 1st year anyway as I have had to take a 12 month contract. She told me she would just add the cost to my monthly payment, I hadn't even agreed to it, no thanks then she hung up.0

You are covered for the 1st 12 months. But even after that, don't take the 'insurance'!No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -

The only thing these people are doing wrong is implying they are from Sky
much as i hate it and they should be put up against a wall and shot.Well maybe thats a bit extreme but they are all legitimate companies, trying to make a living.
So they are not scamming, they are trying to get business, simple as that.make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.0 -

I think it is more than that. The FSA, who regulate the sale of insurance, have strict rules and these are not being followed. The insurance company or intermediary should say who they are and exactly what it is they are selling. There should be a policy and schedule sent out, outlining what is or what is not covered.
With the demise of the manufacturing of $ky and $ky+ boxes there is bound to be an increase in these types of policy. However, because of the relatively low cost of a repair, £40-£45, which will normally fix the only real fault with digiboxes, poor quality capacitors leading to PSU failure, what is the point of having insurance?RIP independent MSE.

Any company that lies to potential customers is not a legitimate company in my book.
They are employing deceitful tactics in order to gain business by deception.0 -
I had something similar happen about 2 months after taking out my subscription - when I told the guy he was talking rubbish because I'd only just had system installed he hung up on me.
Less than a minute later the phone rang again, it was the same guy I'd just politely informed was talking rubbish - he called with the sole purpose of saying '!!!! you' at me several times.
I politely asked if he would pass me to a manager, he repeated his words and hung up.
Was he having a bad day I wonder?
i'd like to point out that I didn't actually swear in my post, I altered the offending word, however it would appear that the swearing filter doesn't like the edited version either. I think you can work out what he said though0
