Mechanics ? Would a pothole do this to a freelander ?

Put the pump on Ebay, you'll at least get some money back from that. I think the point about the inertia switch is a valid one, and it does sound as though in changing the wiring loom the mechanic was attempting to solve the lack of electrical power to the pump. Presumably this would be a lift pump, and not an injection pump?
I'd put it down to experience, and bear in mind that your mechanic was diagnosing the fault by spending your money, and hoping it would eventually go away.0 -
Going off what you are saying about the fuel pump working off but not on the vehicle, I would guess that the fault lies with the connection to the pump. This seems to have been replaced with the new wiring loom/harness. If that is the case, a good mechanic should have picked this up in a short time and possibly resecured/replaced/repaired the wiring harness and saved you the unneccessary cost and labour of replacing the 2 sensors and the pump. Basically if the pump works .....it works! regardless of whether it is on or off the vehicle.
That said to prove it to the garage is a different matter, which would involve testing the sensors, fuel pump, loom etc. with a lot more cost involved.0 -
As far as the inertia switch is concerned, it works like the above post said by preventing the fuel pump running so as to avoid a fire hazard, this works instantly so to travel another six miles rules this out.0

Is it the older model freelander? If so, not surprising really. Driving on smooth tarmac is usually enough to make them fall apart!0

So consensus view - chalk it up to experience and forget about it.0

Yep, with added doubt about the honesty/competency of your garage, I think onejontwo was spot on in post 150
