Oldy wants home phone/broadband advice please

I am sure I can get cheaper but it all gets more confusing with age. Basically I am with BT for home phone. My last bill was £73 with only £10 call charges. My orange broadband is nearly £20 a month. I like unlimited use but don't think I need it anymore so a highish cap would be ok, 15/20 mb.
Can anyone recommend the best (cheapest) combined supplier please?

what "package" are you on for you BT phone? £73 for a quarter seems very high. Mine was That seems rather high - my bill was £47 for the basic package & a few quid of calls ...
I can't help with the broadband - I'm with Orange but get it free bundled with my mobile ...0 -

Thank you for your reply. I have just looked at my last bill and I assume the package name is BT Together local, the total amount was £73.77 & calls were £20.40, sorry I told a lie, I mistakenly just read the total for calls over 40p & not the calls summary.0 -
I'd suggest you get off that BT Together Local package (which hasn't been available to new customers since 2003) as soon as you can. It is no longer cost-effective IMHO (particularly in view of the availablility of 5p per call flat rates for any 01, 02 or 03 calls from the likes of 18185).
The lowest BT voice telephony package is now their Unlimited Weekend Plan (which includes line rental). The price for that is £11.54/month if you pay by direct debit and opt for paper-free billing.
Call that £34.50/quarter - so I echo goggle's comment about £73/quarter being high (you've been paying the equivalent of nearly £40 worth of call charges, not £20).Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.0 -
And as for broadband, we would need to know what exchange you are on to give meaningful advice.
Go to wwww.samknows.com, then exchange search. Look for the available LLU providers and advise who you can get, these will be the cheapest options for you.No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -

Hello
My exchange is 01503. I went onto Samknows but all the exchanges said unknown. I have never heard of "LLU" before ? Thanks.0 -

However I know the Orange is also dear and would like to change supplier who can provide the best combined packages.0 -
Do you have Sky, yu could combine Broadband, Skytalk (free evending and weekend calls) and your TV, maybe worth having a look on their Website.make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.0 -

I do have sky but they said there is a problem with their providing broadband on my exchange. I never did understand because I got different explanations, but Sky say they have to buy the broadband from BT and therefore, they have to double their advertised price. Something like, my exchange is on a loop and my line is at the end of the
loop. I actually live only a couple of hundred yards from the exchange and frankly thought it to be a load of codswallop, so did not change to Sky.0 -

No, what he said was that your line is not LLU (Local Loop Unbundled) for Sky, therefore the price for broadband is much higher than on an LLU exchange. It's what exchange you are on, not your distance from it, that matters in this respect. No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -

The Sky thing is still possible but the broadband will be 'Sky Connect' and will not be free (or cheap) even though you may have a Sky TV subscription.Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market.
