well every item carries a full breakdown of charges from HMRC/RM

so either you havent read the total or you havent read what that grey card actually says

Well it's been nearly a year since my last 'grey' card, but the last time it happened I just paid whatever it said to pay (£11.21), it's probably my poor memory confusing it with the handling charge from the sorting office when a seller on amazon marketplace didn't put on enough stamps) :embarasse

Are you an expert on TARIC Codes? :)

I send lots of stuff to Ghana so i claim back a lot of V.A.T.
I am a Mail Centre Manager so i just pop up to see the Customs guys and they tell me what i can claim back what duties i may have to pay.
I.E whether to import to th U.K then send on to Ghana or send it straight to Ghana.

I didn't think you could buy goods in the UK and then send outside the EU and then claim the VAT back?.

I thought the person who wanted to claim the VAT back had to personally export them out of the UK and/or use a retailer/supplier who operates the VAT refund scheme?.
Anger ruins joy, it steals the goodness of my mind. Forces me to say terrible things. Overcoming anger brings peace of mind, a mind without regret. If I overcome anger, I will be delightful and loved by everyone.

my friend sent me a gift worth $70, i was charged £33 customs.

i thought low value gifts do not occur such outrageous prices?

any help/advice will be appreciated. who do i complain to?

I was once charged double what I should have been, because they misread dollars as pounds. Could that be the problem?
