Unfair charge by Halifax for original statements?

Barclays needs 3 months *original* consecutive statements for a Career Development Loan I have applied for. Halifax said they will charge £5 or £10 they "think".

However, I do not believe I ever received the originals as I have statements using the online system. So as I happen to need them now, I feel I should not be charged - as it is almost being penalised for using the online statement system.

I will have to see how much Halifax *does* charge if anything, but does anyone have any thoughts on this?

What sort of account with Halifax do you have?

Why don't you print off the online statements - my daughter did when she applied for a mortgage and they were accepted. They have the Halifax logo on them.

The most that a bank can charge under the DPA is £10.

You're right if it is for an account printout with all the records of accounts you hold with a bank but for Physical statements there is no maximum.

I sent them statements printed from the internet - with a cover note pointing out why they were online statements. However got a letter today asking me for *original* statements - phoned them up and they confirmed online statements would not be accepted, but did confirm I had been provisionally accepted for the CDL.

My sister works in Barclays mortgage admin surprisingly enough and I asked her advice and she said they accept online statements - confirming what you said - so I am surprised the Career Development Loan people at Barclays do not.

Sounds like you are probably right. The guy I saw in Barclays today who seemed clued up about what the CDL people needed in terms of statements, said Barclays themselves charge £5 per sheet.

The account in Question is a Halifax Cardcash account. I have a Current Account also - however I have not used this as my main account (as the Cardcash one has the direct debits on it) and only opened it 5 months ago - so I assume they will want to see the Cardcash one. I do not have 3 months of statements for my current account one as no transactions made.

My bank charges £10 no more for copies of statements.

Get Halifax to print them out for you and authenticate them. That should suffice and it wont cost you either.

I applied for my CDL over the weekend with Barclays.

My current account is with Nationwide and they said the same - £5 charge for each duplicate statement. Like you I have on-line banking and have chosen not to receive paper statements.

Called into the Nationwide branch - and the girl printed them off without a charge - she did say don't tell anyone...oppps!!!!

Did that but went to Barclays. They said they had had this issue before and that the CDL people would NOT accept them, even though they had been signed and stamped by Halifax. Apparently they want to look at where you spend your money etc etc. But already put the request in for the original styled statements anyway.

Suppose thats why the Halifax like to print them off at the head office so they can make their money out of it.

I will look at writing some sort of letter of complaint anyway if I get charged explaining that I have in fact saved them money in the first place by choosing to have online only statements.

Do you generally receive statements though and its just these 3 months your missing for some reason as you dont make it clear if you have ever received any.

If so maybe it would have been a good idea to ring them after the first month of non receipt

Failing that im sure the charge will be in the T&C and will need to stump up ...... then again perhaps we can now claim these back.......
