Moving to York - where to start looking??

  • You could go up the Baildon hill, which is by the Saltaire Village, either walking or using the Victorian tramway*** (costs 60p per way)

***The Shipley Glen Cable Tramway is the oldest working cable tramway in Great Britain (cliff lifts excepted). Dating from 1895, the line was built to serve the local beauty of Shipley Glen, near Saltaire in West Yorkshire.

At the top of Baildon hill are moorland and a golf course. It is the highest hill in Bradford and could get a 365 degree panoramic view of surrounding hills.:j

And the rude bit from 'Rita, Sue and Bob too was filmed on Baildon Moors!'

I am from Baildon but now live in Morley which is in betweemn Leeds?Bradford and Wakefield and close to the motorways and the White Rose shopping Centre!

I grew up in Harrogate, but been living in York for the last few years. Just exchanged contracts on a house west side of York, yey! I've done the York to Harrogate commute for a few months which was quite bearable. Living on the west side of York means easy access to the outer ringroad and to Harrogate, Wetherby and Leeds (you avoid the awlful city centre traffic). If commuting to Leeds i'd certainly pick west side of York as as much as i love York, traffic is awlful. They are a number of park and ride schemes in existance and they are planning more so whether the situation will improve. There are good bus and train services running York to leeds, and leeds has a super bus services for catching connections. House prices in both York and Harrogate are pricey, but we've just bought a 5 yr old 3 bed end terrace for £156000 so you can find some reasonable deals. Good luck!

I will find out more about this film.

I think York gained from a lot of decent council houses which have now become private, but there are still a lot of dodgy parts. Even a nice area like Clifton will have dodgy roads like Crombie Avenue; the newer estates on the outskirts of Clifton used to have a lot of travellers. But like anywhere else you get what you pay for. You can pay hundreds of thousands for a terrace with no garden, or £130,000 for a big ex council house. I would advise renting for a while and really get to know the local micro-markets, or better still just accept Harrogate is a better bet long term.
    Been away for a while.

    Hi guys
Not sure if this is the right place for my questions but you all seem very knowledgable about York so here goes!
Hubby and I are having a holiday in York next month. Can you tell me the best way to get to York from Leeds/Bradford airport? There doesn't seem to be a direct service so I'm assuming we have to go into Leeds and then get another bus to York? Also we are doing the usual attractions eg the Minster and Museum but is there anything the locals would recommend that we might not think of. And any good restaurants or pubs would be helpful too! Many thanks
    Janey:)

L/B Airport doesn't have any direct rail links to it. I'd recommend a taxi to a) Horsforth railway station and local train to Leeds station, then train to York, or b) taxi to Leeds station then train to York, or c) taxi to York - but that costs a lot. Depends partly on how much you want to pay and the day / time of your travel. You can also get the Coastliner bus from Leeds to York, not sure how it compares cost wise but will take a bit longer.

Other attractions? There are free walking tours round the city centre which leave once or twice a day from the Tourist Information centre (or somewhere nearby, ask them for details and times). You'll already have noted the Minster, Yorvik, Castle Museum, Railway Museum. Also Treasurer's House (N Trust). Have a look too at this thread

If you want to explore the city centre on foot I'd recommend the Snickleways book

Places to eat? Have a look at this thread

  • If you like architecture I can recommend visiting Bradford city centre, shopping area is very run down (virtually non-existent!) but if you look at second floor and above there are loads of amazing Victorian gothic carvings. I wouldn't suggest you actually live in Bradford unless you have a very long term view![/QUOTE]

Totally agree with the above and I live in the dump called Bradford!

Bradford has a direct train link to London from both stations. Although one of the stations is only once a day. I wouldn't recommend living there though.
York is a really lovely place though but very diffcult to live if you drive. The centre gets choked up and especially worse on race days. The city roads are mostly anicent and narrow. Knaresborough is very nice place but not great for the train to london.
