    Wow, lucky you.
York is one of my favourite places. Cant help with living locations but there are so many places around the outskirts that are just brilliant to live.
Have a look at Haxby, My Father in law lived there for many years.

There is also so many places to explore while you live there. And other places nearby, Harrogate, Ripon, Leeds.

    Like i say, lucky you.
(and the people up here are loverly)
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.

York is just gorgeous but hell to live in the summer as it's constantly crammed with tourists. Have you considered Wakefield? On the main line straight to London, easy access to Leeds and Bradford and it's up and coming, lots of new developments along the river. The shopping centre is poor but there are loads of stunning Georgian and other period properties all around the city.

Saltaire has easy access to both Leeds and Bradford on public transport and is very 'smart': practically the entire village is listed/ conservation area. River and a canal with lots of cottages and mill conversions all along. If you like architecture I can recommend visiting Bradford city centre, shopping area is very run down (virtually non-existent!) but if you look at second floor and above there are loads of amazing Victorian gothic carvings. I wouldn't suggest you actually live in Bradford unless you have a very long term view!

    thanks firefox.

know wakefield is the other place with a quick train line...trying to find somewhere that fits the bill for my outdoor country loving husband and me who likes that where we live at the moment we can walk into town and go to the pub/go out to eat and you don't have to drive miles to get to a shop....

is it worth a look with those opposite needs?!

Are you used to London? Everything is miles away in London, takes you forever to get out and Leeds is rather the same, Bradford to a lesser extent. The best countryside is north of Leeds, tho there are plenty of beautiful spots around Wakefield maybe ten minutes in the car. If you go too far north of Leeds it will take you a while to get to work and DH a while to get to the rail station. If you want girly SHOPPING everyone goes to Leeds, Sheffield Meadowhall or Manchester, depending where you are. York also has plenty of lovely shops of course but it's more of a day out place - I lived there for a couple of years and it really was no fun in the summer.

My money would be a large village like Saltaire - it has a good selection of nice pubs/ restaurants and a little parade of shops (butcher, florist, wedding shop, grocers etc), there is an Asda in Shipley just along the river and Morrisons fairly easy to get to as well. There are streets of period terraces very close to the rail station, which means you are also perfectly positioned for the canal and river which both run parallel to the railway line at that point. You can walk up into the hills or along the river there for lots of nature. And of course it's not more than five minutes in the car to a proper bit of countryside!

Ilkley is quite a bit further out and very desirable amongst people who commute into Leeds, again lots of lovely old stone buildings and smart shops. I suspect there will be nice restaurants and pubs given that a lot of professionals live there. I don't know it as well so can't give detail but it's every bit as lovely as Saltaire and right on the Yorkshire moors. I think it's more expensive than Saltaire but if you are used to London prices ... http://www.visitbradford.com/ilkley-wharfedale/

thanks again firefox....don't mean to plague you with questions, but i should have also said that my husband's job 2 days a week will be down south - hence the need either for quick train and/or ability to get to the m1/a1....

where would you suggest having a look round wakefield? on paper that looks worth a look given its south of leeds and with a quick train, just would be helpful to know areas in and around that we could take a look at

    thanks for your help!

Don't want to rain on your parade, but I live in Wakefield and trust me - it's truly horrible.
Where you can live is very much dependent on how much cash you have. Do you plan to buy or rent ?
.................:)....I'm smiling because I have no idea what's going on ...:)

Try Skipton - there is a direct train to London first thing in the morning (well, I think there is) and at other times, a good link to Leeds. Right on the edge of the Dales, one of the nicest small market towns in the UK. Also a rail line to Bradford.

If transport is important for both of you, a little bit more information about location would be helpful - the rail lines are a bit complicated for historical reasons, and what looks easy on the map might not be as easy in reality (eg, Bradford has two stations, which aren't linked, and changing platforms at Shipley can take ages.

If he is working in London two days a week, is he staying over night?

There are quick trains from Leeds and York (around two hours each way), but I would not recommend travelling from the area between Leeds and York to either station via the A64 to pick up an early train (did York to Leeds for 7 years and it was a lot easier by train).

if you are working between Bradford and Leeds look at the Airedale and Wharfedale rail lines. Both offer trains into Leeds and Bradford. There is the direct train from Skipton on the Airedale line

If you want countryside, you need to decide what sort. Rolling fields and hills or moorland landscapes?
If you've have not made a mistake, you've made nothing

You could go up the Baildon hill, which is by the Saltaire Village, either walking or using the Victorian tramway*** (costs 60p per way)

***The Shipley Glen Cable Tramway is the oldest working cable tramway in Great Britain (cliff lifts excepted). Dating from 1895, the line was built to serve the local beauty of Shipley Glen, near Saltaire in West Yorkshire.

At the top of Baildon hill are moorland and a golf course. It is the highest hill in Bradford and could get a 365 degree panoramic view of surrounding hills.:j
