York Eating Out

Off to York in 2 weeks for the weekend. Taking my son and his partner. I went to Uni there and worked there for a while too. I also do the races there several times a year but I'm out of touch with the best places to eat. We'd like to have a nice meal out. We're not hard to please. We'll eat anything. My son's favourite is Thai and I'm very fond too.
Any recommendations please,

Theres a lovely Thai restaurant Siam House on goodramgate, theres also a great and reasonably priced Indian restaurant, Akbars on George Hudson Street, Or if the weathers nice you could try Lucia's just off Swinegate, where you can sit outside. Both Akbars and Lucia's have websites but I cant post them as I'm still a new user.
Hope that gives you some idea? Let me know if you'd like anymore suggestions.

Not sure about Thai food in York, but the Black Swan Inn does pretty good English pub grub, and they do the biggest Yorkshire Puddings that I've ever seen.0

Old Siam at the top of Micklegate is also a Thai restaurant but you'll need to book as it's quite small and gets quite busy.
It partly depends on your budget, there's quite a few restaurants on Fossgate - it was listed in the Google Streetview Foodie street of the year, also there's Cafe concerto on High Petergate near the Minster, and cafe number 8 at the bottom of Gillygate. Both of these are proper bistros / restaurants at night, not cafes (though Cafe C is a great cafe during teh day, with ruinous puddings ...
If you like Chinese then Red Chilli Pepper on rougier street, near the bottom of Micklegate, is an experience. There are recognisable dishes as well as the rest of the menu ... !
Mediterranean there's the olive tree near clifford's tower.
But I'd always consider melton's too, on Fossgate / walmgate. Bistro food but really well cooked, they also do tapas and sometimes have food festivals.0 -
I agree with Meltons, too, I have told friends about it and all enjoyed itFiliss0

Thanks for all the advice. I know the Black Swan at Peasholme Green. Good beer too. Always a bonus!0

Just back from a great weekend in York.
We ate at the Masons on Friday and Siam House on the Saturday, both excellent.
My son knows his Thai food and he was very impressed with Siam House.
Thanks again.0 -
Hi all,
interesting thread as we are off to York this weekend and looking for a good Indian Restaurant.
Also thought about Fiesta Mehicana - is that any good?

anybody? x0

Fiesta Mehicana is all right but not great - just a fairly standard Mexican restaurant. Akhbars is supposed to be very nice but I've never been in there myself. There's also one further up Micklegate near the Wetherspoons - it's purple and I think it's called something like Saffron Lounge. Food is pretty good and they serve the biggest naans I've ever seen in my life.
I agree with whoever said Melton's Too, I went there for my graduation meal and my family were well impressed. The fact it was packed out with fellow grads (as opposed to tourists) says much in that it's very much a locals' restaurant as it's quite a way off the beaten track.
Cafe Concerto is great for tea and cake, as is Coffee Culture on Goodramgate - they do the best cinnamon toast and hot chocolate in the world.
For good pub grub, I'd go with the Old White Swan on the corner of Goodramgate(?) - my York geography is failing me a bit - next to the hog roast shop, their sausage mash and gravy menu is awesome. And you have to have a drink in a York Brewery pub - either the Yorkshire Terrier on Stonegate, the Last Drop Inn or the Three Legged Mare (near Cafe Concerto).
And for the love of God, if you want Chinese food go to Red Chilli rather than the Jumbo's buffet..."A mind needs books as a sword needs a whetstone, if it is to keep its edge." - Tyrion LannisterMarried my best friend 1st November 2014Loose = the opposite of tight (eg "These trousers feel a little loose")Lose = the opposite of find/gain (eg "I'm going to lose weight this year")0 -
hahaha jumbo's buffet - sounds like the crap chinese buffets we have here.
That's great advice, thanks.0
