Fiesta Mehicana is all right but not great - just a fairly standard Mexican restaurant. Akhbars is supposed to be very nice but I've never been in there myself. There's also one further up Micklegate near the Wetherspoons - it's purple and I think it's called something like Saffron Lounge. Food is pretty good and they serve the biggest naans I've ever seen in my life.

I agree with whoever said Melton's Too, I went there for my graduation meal and my family were well impressed. The fact it was packed out with fellow grads (as opposed to tourists) says much in that it's very much a locals' restaurant as it's quite a way off the beaten track.

Cafe Concerto is great for tea and cake, as is Coffee Culture on Goodramgate - they do the best cinnamon toast and hot chocolate in the world.

For good pub grub, I'd go with the Old White Swan on the corner of Goodramgate(?) - my York geography is failing me a bit - next to the hog roast shop, their sausage mash and gravy menu is awesome. And you have to have a drink in a York Brewery pub - either the Yorkshire Terrier on Stonegate, the Last Drop Inn or the Three Legged Mare (near Cafe Concerto).

And for the love of God, if you want Chinese food go to Red Chilli rather than the Jumbo's buffet...

Red Chilli and Akhbars were superb.
    Thanks
  • The Saffron Desi at the top of Micklegate is lovely - miles better than Akbars - and Akbars is good!

Similar prices to Akbars, but better food and bigger portions. Apparently Prince Harry ate there when seeing his girlfriend in York.

Try it, you won't be disappointed.
