Both my brother and I were told that our parents would support us whilst still in full time education. I actually left home at 17 (serious brat) and went to live with friends of the family paying board from my part time wages. My brother was invited to leave his BTEC after year one having done no coursework, my parents made him do all the housework until he found a job .... which he did remarkably quickly. ;)

In both cases I can say having to contribute to the household when we left home/ education was the making of us, my brother is very successful in his chosen career and I am pretty well educated (mostly part time whilst working). I agree with those who say your son should be introduced to the wonders of your household budget, and expected to contribute.

Out of the £50 he only needs sufficient for the occasional bus pass (may still have a student one or can get a JSA discount), stamps and other bits for job hunting. If you haven't already introduce him to MSE and see if he can save you money on your household bills, find cheap recipes and cook for the family, get some ideas for increasing his income. With these skills when he eventually leaves home or goes away to uni he will be much better equipped to cope. :T
