Not saying this is what the OP has done but . . .

I used to work in M&S and they had a problem with people stealing clothing and then trying to get refunds on them. M&S got tough on the situation and refuse to refund without a reciept. It looks like sainsbury's has takin things one step further and wont even do exchanges now.

I've had confirmation from Sainsburys, guess we have to keep our receipts without fail in future!

Thanks for your email. I’m sorry that you were unable to return the item of clothing you purchased as you didn’t have your receipt. I can understand how frustrating this can be.

I can confirm that you must have your receipt to return any items to our stores. This is due to our refund policy being revised recently.

I am grateful for you taking the time to contact us as it helps to improve our products and services. We hope to see you in store again soon.

Take the person that was with you when you bought them, to confirm you bought them there as a witness. ;)

That is also part of what is allowed without a receipt.

I cannot see that being an actual policy? Easy for shoplifters, just get a mate to come in and say "I saw him pay, honest"!!!!!

You've no legal right to exchange something just because it's the wrong size. Only the original purchaser has any statutory rights, but if the goods aren't faulty then they can't insist on an exchange/refund either. If a shop offers anything additional to this then it is down to their goodwill and they can set any requirements of their own.

I think it is a ludicrous policy.Which scenario could you describe that a dodgy person would benefit from.

They obtain an item worth £15,still bearing sainsburys labels,and..er..exchange it for another item worth £15.How could the company lose out? I think discretion is called for.If they wanted to steal an item, they would have stolen the item they wanted.

I didn't want a refund, I just wanted to exchange and they said I couldn't plus the clothing was sainsbury's own. But new rule across the whole of sainsburys apparently. I've mailed sainsburys to check this is right.
I don't see no problem, swopping like for like!.
Go back and argue the toss, the fact that you don't want money should make them see sense.

You only have to look at the number of "credit notes" surfacing on eBay to realise how shops can lose out.

It's not a ludicrous policy at all. Sainsbury's are doing far more than they have to by actually offering the opportunity to return goods. They aren't exactly asking the world to expect the purchaser to return them with a proof of purchase.

Good customer service and discression could also bankrupt a company!
