I am another left hooker. The term cack-handed and sinister were long used to describe us. Many of my mother's siblings were left handed but forced to be right-handed (caned for using their left hands) and it adversely affected their success at school.

As a result she let us find our own ways. My brother and sister are both very left-handed and I am a left handed writer who knits and crochets left-handed but uses many tools right-handed. I cannot even use left-handed scissors. My sister is hopeless with a sewing machine because they are set up for right-handers.

I used to cause havoc playing pool when younger as I could switch the cue between hands!

On the other hand both the kids are right-handers.

If he proves to be a left hander, you may find that he appears a bit clumsy in some ways because so much equipment is set up for right handers; buttons/switches/handles positioned for right-handers. On the other hand, lefties are often very very good at three dimensional space; a quarter of architects are left-handers (no jokes re that folks). We are good at map-reading, piloting airplanes and gymnastics.

I agree with the others - it's nothing to worry about. I write right handed. I am nearly 21 and it's only been in the last few years that I will always use scissors with my right hand. I can use a knife, fork or spoon in either hand.

i write right handed ( although it is pretty hideus ) but can use a pen in my left ( and thats pretty hidues too). if you hand me a ball / scissors/ bat / wii mote, i just use it in whatever hand you put it in. i prefer to eat left handed but will leave a table set right handed if i'm out and carry on eating. when workgin on the car / house it is brilliant as i use whichever hadn is closest. i never have problems sawig timber and can swap easily. i can use whichever hand can get the screwdriver at the screw without bending in 2. Its pretty useful.

I'm another leftie, although I do use a mouse and scissors with my right hand. I knit right handed too, knitting the leftie way just feels weird!

My uncle is a leftie too and he suffered at school because he was forced to use his right hand.

My biggest issue as a leftie is that the cash machines are set up for righties - just plain awkward for me!

I'm left handed, as is my father, but am ambidextrous with some (although not all) activities...I can only write left handed, but can hold bats/rackets in either hand...archery I discovered I have to do left handed.

I'm 23 and I still get confused sometimes when trying new sports, etc, as I never know which way I will find easiest, but it's just a case of trial and error, nothing to worry about :)

My oldest son writes right handed, uses scissors left handed. He plays cricket and will bat in one hand (sorry - can't remember at the moment which hand he uses) and can bowl using either!

It took him to quite an age before he was happy with what he did - probably when he started more formal writing.
