I downloaded Avast Free Antivirus 5.0.418 this evening and I’ve been trying to open the desktop shortcut but doesn’t appear to open. When I click on it it keeps coming up: The application has failed to start because its side by side configuration is incorrect. Please see the application event for more details.
Same thing appears to happen when I click on the appropriate file.
C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast5\AvastUI.exe
Can someone please explain this and tell me what it is I should be doing?
Thanks

This is commonly a problem with Windows Vista. Is that what you're running? When was the last time you downloaded updates?
It's to do with a .dll file that could have been altered by another program or might be corrupt, updates should remedy this, Vista Service Pack 1and 2 should solve this.0 -
Side by Side error [ C++ problem ] - are you on Vista ?
Unless you can edit ' manifests ' I suggest you uninstall Avast and use MSE from : -

I am on Vista. Where is this manifests thing, I tried to do this ealier but couldn't see it anywhere.
What you are also saying is I should uninstall Avast 5.0 and download Microsoft Security Essentials instead.
This is the program I installed. Avast was informing me the old one was coming to an end in 24 days and that I should install the new version.
Can you also explain Vista Service Pack 1 and 2 is and how these should solve what it is that's been happening [or not happening]?0 -

if you right click 'computer' then 'properties', it'll tell you what SP you have.
I'm running Vista Home Premium and Avast 5.0.418 with no problems.0 -
And then when you want to update just go to Control Panel > Windows Update > Check for Updates (Top Left)0

I’ve also discovered 6 important updates that are available. One is for Internet Explore 8, a couple of security updates, an update for Windows Mail Junk E-mail Filter, and an update for Windows Vista and one for Microsoft Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool.
I’m guessing these should be automatically installed when I shutdown my laptop as the shutdown icon is also showing an icon for updates which I’m aware happens quite frequently.
Just notice as well that a one of these is the same as mentioned above so should hopefully update when I shutdown my laptop. In fact it’s this one: Security Update for Windows Vista (KB959426)0 -
I'm still having trouble trying to open Avast 5.0.418. It also says it's not running as well.
How can I see the see the application event as mentioned in my OP if the antivirus software won't open.
Don't know what I'm supposed to be doing to correct this.0
