Hi
My o/h bought a shogun (1996) about 2 weeks ago for £2000, we test drove it just after another guy. Everything went fine got great px on my car. Here's my problem:
After we had it for about 3 days there was a horrible smell coming from the wheel, we later found out that the caliper had ceased on the front drivers side wheel, OK its an old car, you expect it not to be perfect. When i went to pick it up from garage after forking out £158, they had some great news for me, the rear brakes needed replacing and the chasis was a bit rough after asking a few more questions i found that the car would definatly not pass an MOT (due in July). I contacted the local garage where i bought the car who tried the sold as seen speech but i reminded them that there is nowhere on the paperwork and there was no conversation about sold as seen (reading some threads on here i understand it is illegal to use??). Anyway the upshot is they have offered £100 as a good will gesture when we told them that that would not even cover the cost to get the brakes done never mind the chasis i was told that is all they will offer. We have been quoted around the £200 exc VAT for each side brakes.Where do we stand, help always appreciated

also i can not stress enough the importance of getting a vehicle inspection done
and if you buy from a car dealer always insist on 12 months mot

I asked for 12 month MOT but as it already had 6 left they didn't see the reason (i know stupid). They even suggested that i go to where the last MOT was done to ask them why they passed it!!! apart from it being over 250 miles away it was obviously not as bad back in July

because they knew the car was a shed and would have cost them to mot it

i reckon a little call to trading standards would shock them
may be worth seeking advice from cab or similar:)

    Didn't you look underneath it?

    If no, why not?

If you dont know anything about cars, take someone who does next time.

Absolutely no comeback...why should there be?

Edit...I dont know anyone who would pay £2000 on a 14 year old car with only 6 months MOT!!
  • Take the £100 as compensation for the siezed caliper (think you should have allowed them the chance to fix it first).
The garage is saying the rear brakes need replacing. Have you noticed any noise? Lack of brakes? Had it on a brake tester? Without this they are offering an opinion. The garage sold you a car that stopped when the pedal was pressed (I hope!)
A rough chassis doesnt mean an MOT failure. You know it's 14 years old, obviously its not mint.

I didn't think to go to them to be honest, when it comes to brakes you don't mess around do you.you dont mind paying for stuff like that. i used my garage that i have been happy with for a good few years. No there is no noise and it starts and stops when it should i am going to take it to another garage tomorrow for a second opinion

The only way to get genuine peace of mind (to a certain extent)is to put it in for an MOT.
If the brakes fail, or theres a failure due to chassis corrosion, perhaps then you could try and get them for a not fit for purpose type thing.
    Good Luck.

I just checked autotrader. That doesn't look wildly wrong. Plenty around that age for £1600 - £2400.
