I went to Malta in 1993 and have struck it off the 'will return someday' list, glad I didn't take the kids! The 1st room we were shown was rank, the bedding had defiently seen better years! The pokey 'kitchen' was a joke with mismatched crockery and a kettle with a thick layer of limescale holding the rest of the rust together! I was told that was all new at the start of the season and must expect rust due to being on the coast! Yes ok, (I live on the coast) I had to have 'words' with the Manager for an hour till he moved us to a far superior room, which turned out to be excellent! We were there when HMS Ark Royal was in dock, I attended a c0cktail party a few days later and turned round to be introduced to the Manager of our Hotel! Was he glad he had changed my room! We did laugh!

how can you judge the country / location / destination by the standard of the accom though ?!!

i know if you have bad hotel etc it puts a real downer on the rest of the holiday but you can still appreciate the location / surroundings etc ? or was that poor too ? lol

I haven't struck the country off just based on my experience, I had 20/40 other peoples views just the same. As I said HMS Ark Royal went in so there were quite a few other personnel on the Island. In the hotel I stayed in there were 6/7 other families we knew, 6/7 families we didn't know. A the c0cktail party there were 40/50 other families I knew and apart from few people who booked in villas or into 5* hotels the majoritys experience was similar to mine. Their 2/3 * isn't comparable to what I call 3* more 1*. I did however think it was due to the influx of 2000 people that made the island over crowded and shoddy, so we forgave a lot at the time. I was also not as seasoned traveller as I am now, i would not have been happy to take my children there at that time, it may have improved.

I really enjoyed myself - but can see that it may not be everyones cup of tea.

Our hire car was great - new Peugeot with air con - loved driving it lool...

I am 26 and i went with my Mum - nighlife was aparent but not in your face. There were clubs going till wee small hours but kids with parents still walking through the toen centre at gone 10 ish so clearly not a lager loutish destination. we chose to sit in some of the street bars and have a few cocktails...lovely!

PM your email addy if you want a few snaps of scenery and accomodation - they are scanned in and uploaded so BIG files!!

  • I really can't decide at all! I've read loads of reviews here and at other sites and it seems to be that Malta isn't really for us this year, the bad reviews out weigh the good by 70% or there abouts.

I've almost convinced my OH that Benidorm is the place to go, I don't particularly like Spain, having said that I have only been once when I was 18 to Salou, everyone kept staring at me because I am a paler shade of white!! It made me really uncomfortable, they should be used to us ghost like English folk by now??

I don't mind it this time round, different place and all plus I haven't heard a bad word about it yet everyone I know that has been reccommends it or mentions it anyway!

    Thanks for replies!
