Holidays to Malta?

Hello,
My boyfriend and I are looking at going to Malta with our 17 month old in October, November this year. Has anyone got any reccomendations for hotels or areas to stay at? My boyfriends also desperate to know how much a pint is . To be honest whats it like for overall cheapness? Also whats the climate like at that time of the year? Were looking at half board or self catering if it's cheap enough over there!
We almost booked the Palm court hotel as they had a fantastic deal on all inclusive at 380 each for two weeks! However once we read the rather poor reviews we quickly changed our minds! we knew it was slightly basic when we took a virtual tour of the hotel but people who actually stayed there said the food was awful and the staff very unhelpful! A couple of people actually said it was really enjoyable the other end of the scale. They were all different age ranges and some with families others not! We don't have an abundance of cash but we would like to have a decent holiday, I'm asking here because I always get an answer and I can't face trawling through the net anymore, it's really exhausting!
Cheers any replies helpful!

We always book with Chevron when we go to Malta.

I went to Malta 27th June for 1 week and hated it. It isn't cheap, its pretty much the same price as here.
I would say assume a 3* is 1/2* and a 4* 2/3*. We stayed in the Topaz (4*) and I have certainly been in better 3*'s.
IMHO there are better places to go, there's no nightlife, there's no beach (just shingle) its expensive, nothing is duty free so fags etc are all the same price.
On the plus side, you canhave a nice trip to Sicily and its very very hot. Oh and only 3 hours flight. Other than that I'm struggling0 -
We honeymooned on Malta a few years ago. Went with Chevron and stayed here :
Gillieru Harbour Hotel ****
Highly recommended - especially for the Babycham in the bar! That's Numberwang!0 -
My partner and I had a pleasant off season weeks break there but it wouldn't be my choice for a holiday with child/ren. Why not try the north of Spain, weather tends to be good in October, children are adored and catered for wherever you go. Flights ( Bilbao Santander or Biarritz) and hotels very reasonable; beaches & food great. My son and family live there, inc. 15month grandaughter we all love it.M.E..... MORE than you know0

Well, it is a few weeks since I have been shot down in flames, so here goes, I am ready for another session.
BUT.
I stayed in the Palm Court from June 7th to 14th, this year and I agree, it is not the Ritz, but I didn't pay the Ritz's prices.
I am a single Mum on a tight budget and £350 got me and my 2 kids a weeks, half board stay. I had been warned by my friend it would be well below British standards, but I was not there to stay in the hotel all the time, all I needed from the hotel was a bed, a wardrobe and some food.
I work as a Customer Service Evaluator and do tend to be fussy at the best of times, so did wonder what I was letting myself in for, but nothing was horrendously wrong. The reception staff were polite and friendly but didn't seem to be able to cope in a calm manner when there was a rush !!. The Restaurant was clean and tidy and any mess was promptly cleaned up, all tables were cleaned as soon as people left, the food in my honest opinion was really good and there was ample of it, there were "sittings" for supper which meant there were no queues and it was really nice to have hot plates to put the food on, this is something that is so often lacking in this country.
I tend to be able to sleep anywhere, so do my kids, but I found the beds comfortable enough, but the reviews are usually right about them, they are a chip board base with a maatress on top.
If I had more money, I would probably go somewhere else, however, unless a rich man comes along and sweeps me off my feet  I can't see my financial situation changing,in which case, we will be going back to Malta next June and staying in the Palm Court again, I wouldrather a holiday here and know what to expect than no holiday at all for the kids. :j"Dogs come when they are called. Cats take a message and get back to you" :j :j0 -
Ok, to be honest I've searched through lot's of hotels and they don't seem to be very impressive for the cash we want to spend i.e not very much! were looking about 300 each. How about Tunisia anyone been there?0

Malta is one of those places that you either love or hate. I love it and have stayed at quite a few hotels around the island.
My personal favourite is Mellieha Bay Hotel.
It is out on its own, but dont let this put you off as every part of the island can be reached easily by public transport, and some of the service buses also call into the hotels carpark to collect passengers. the hotel has all its rooms with sea view, and has lovely gardens as well. You can book this hotel direct or by Thomsons, they very often have good deals.
Check reviews here http://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Review-g230152-d267334-Reviews-Mellieha_Bay_Hotel-Mellieha_Island_of_Malta.html
I have also stayed at Suncrest Hotel
Not as bad as some reviews would have, but not the best. I stayed here on an allocation on arrival.

Also on allocation on arrival stayed at Bella vista.
No idea why they call it beautiful view as it viewed nothing. The hotel was ok, but quite far from anything in a built up area. It does have a hotel shuttle service to get you into town though.

Hope this has helped.Josey0 -

I quite agree Josey. Our one trip there ranks as the worst holiday we've ever had. Ants and other creatures at all levels in the room, broken air-con, inedible food, etc.
But other friends have really enjoyed the island.
I can only put it down to lack of quality control over the hotels. If you're lucky enough to land on a good one, you're fine. We didn't!!!
So, Melissa, if you do decide to go, checkout hotel reviews before you commit.0 -
My partner and I stayed at the Westin Dragonara in St Julians Bay. We enjoyed ourselves because we are not really 'lying on the beach' people.
We enjoy doing sights etc.
We also stayed for a couple of days on Comino. Fully Inc.
Wasn't the cheapest holiday but it was enjoyable. Holidays are what you make of them!!:o:dance: "Never save something for a special occasion. Every day in your life is a special occasion". _party_0 -
Palm court was where we booked our honeymoon.
Woke up after one night saying to my new hubby I feel wet. The room had flooded. That hotel was on the worlds worst hotels lists. We upgraded to the Topaz like the other poster on theis thread did this was better but still very basic
Id never go back if they paid me. I spent most the holiday crying and getting eaten alive by insects
If you really do wnat to go theres a compnay called maltabargains.co.uk that do some good prices0
