IE8 is quicker , but the most important thing is that you have closed a load of security holes in windows and made the PC safer

SP3 (Which you definitely need) will make it slower though

    Done.
Now I have to upgrade to IE 8 somehow, apparently.
Do I still need to do this if I can persuade OH to use FF like me instead of IE?

Oh and if you ask me the second sentence is worth the effort .

Its definitely worthwhile upgrading to IE8 even if youve no intentions of using it
certain sites only work with IE and microsoft builds its security features around people having it
I also use Firefox myself, with the NOSCRIPT plugin to make it the safest browser around by far

If you download any of the Optional updates I would avoid especially if you have a older computer to not download the Net Frame work updates which will slow an older system down, you can install them if you need them at a later date.

Also I woukld have said to uncheck one High Priority update which is the Microsoft Browser Choice Screen (KB976002) and just hide it.
