When you have followed Rik's advice about ccleaner don't forget Browntoa's advice too get your XP up to SP3 , visit the microsoft update site (you will probably have to use IE for that )

looks like you're nearly sorted, notice how I kept out of the way and let the techie folks assist you, anyway if you still want this:

tools > options > content > block pop-up windows.

have done the ccleaner and the registry clean . Do I want toback up changes to the registry ( it asks?)
I am guessing i ask it to fix the selected items?

I'M a bit scared. i know you people know your stuff but the last time my son took his laptop for "repair" the man said it may be a dodgy windows update apparently he'd had alot of people with the same trouble!
Not doubting, jsust seeking reassurance!
