try turning the router off and on, and reboot the PC, is the ssid the same on both.
What you are saying sounds impossible to me, because you can only have one encryption key. Are you sure you haven't already pasted the key, because you can't normally see the key in windows once it's pasted, you just get ..... 's
whenever you change the key or ssid, the wireless connection should drop, which is why it needs to be done wired.Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time? :rolleyes:0 -
I've added a new connection settings with a new ssid name.
When I close and reopen the router settings, they are all as i want - I have to do this wirelessly don't I?
In windows i deleted the old ssid but the new one still shows the old network key, I presume it is the old one because it's ******** ie 8 and not 63.0 -
When you say wired do you mean using the ethernet cable to connect to the router like I had to when initially setting it up, or using my old dial up connection?0

If you past the 63 character key into windows, it always shows ******* regardless of the length of the underlying key.Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time? :rolleyes:0

by wired, I mean the ethernet cable, but if the ssid in windows matches the new one on the router, and that is the only connection visible in windows, then I suspect that everthing is working as it should, double check that the ssid on the router is the same, and the confusion is because windows always shows ******** instead of 63 *'sEver get the feeling you are wasting your time? :rolleyes:0

Oooopppsss!!
That will be it then!!:o
When I pasted it, it was showing 63 characters, then when I went back to check it was just 8 so I thought it hadn't changed.:mad:0 -
I'm glad that's sorted?? thought I was cracking up for a minute. Microsoft don't make it easy..Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time? :rolleyes:0

Thanks so much for your help!
But why does it just show 8 characters
Even when I changed it to 9 or 10 characters it was still showing 8
Anyway its all ok now so thank you:T :T :T :T0 -
Lazy microsoft programming.. it's just telling you there is a hidden key there, so a bit pointless having 63 **'s but would have helped in this situation.
If you do the mac address thing, then you will have the most secure router in the street.. you need to add the wired and wireless mac address, wire it up, and do an ipconfig >c:\1.txt to make sure you have the mac addresses saved somewhere. use the add screen to pickup the mac address.
in the unlikely event it all goes pear shaped, there is a reset button on the back of your router, which resets to defaults, and then you can use the backup you made to reload it quickly.Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time? :rolleyes:0 -
Thanks again!
I'll give the mac address a go tomorrow - so expect some more questions then!
Good night!0
