yes you can safely remove the old ssid.
the backup settings is just a text file that can be opened in notepad, to use it to reconfigure the router should it lose it's settings in the future, just use the same screen in the router config, and do a restore instead of a backup.
You're welcome, glad you did it properly, most people give up cos it's looks complicated, but as you've found it's not too bad if you work through it methodically. You'll be able to teach the neighbours now!Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time? :rolleyes:0 -
I can't save my new network key in the windows properties box, it just reverts to the old one which still works.0

If you've saved the same one on the router, the old one can't work...? Did you click apply when you changed it on the router.
Is the new one 63 characters long without any quotation marks "" or '' or spaces (also check there is no space on the end by pasting into notepad, the space would make it 64 chars..which is too long. I usually go into the router config screen and copy it to clipboard (Control C), then paste it into windows (Control V), leaves no room for error.Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time? :rolleyes:0 -
I've tried pasting the new 63 bit password (no " or spaces) again, it seems to accept it in the netgear settings page, but won't in the windows settings.
The old one still appears whenever I reopen it and appears automatically in the connection window and is accepted just by clicking connect.
I haven't added the mac address manually yet, might that be the reason?0 -
Are you doing all this wired, or wireless.. suggest wired..
goto https://www.grc.com/passwords and make sure you are selecting the box under
63 random printable ASCII characters:
paste that into notepad (make sure there is no space on the end of the lines), do half a dozen IE refreshes, and paste the new keys into the same notepad file (to get a few available)
try deleting the existing connection in Windows, then add it again with the new ssid, if it still doesn't work, use one of the other keys in your notepad file, and paste into router apply, then windows apply (you will have to do this wired, if you delete the connection).
I know this may seem a pain, but once it is set, you no longer need to worry about it, and you are almost there..
If it still doesn't work, count the number of characters in the key, it needs to be 63, no spaces or " or ';s
copy and paste the first 60 if you are not sure about the space on the end.Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time? :rolleyes:0 -
Was doing it wireless, will try again wired.0

you may need to do
start, run, cmd
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew
when you switch between wired and wireless.
If you are doing it wireless, then there is something wierd going on, because if you have really changed the setting on the router (always click apply after any change), then you cannot be connected with the old settings, so how are you connecting?Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time? :rolleyes:0 -
I can't change the network key in windows to anything other than what it was originally.0

delete the wireless connection in the previous screen, then re-add it.Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time? :rolleyes:0

The new 63 bit code is definetely saved in the router settings, but the old one in windows - and it still connects.0
