  • Two things worry me about this deal. The first is that both here and on WP a new unknown poster alerted everyone and even claimed "...the person who recommended to me has now had two orders delivered."

The second is that the wine list was obviously copied from another merchant.

The list was very extensive and had quite a number of very well-regarded wines on it. If these wines were being held in Europe, why not sell them there rather than incur shipping and duty costs to sell them in the UK?

Is anyone out there still hoping their wine will turn up?

I guess I am one of the lucky ones that 'only' ordered £300 of champagne - not for a wedding or other occasion and in that sense I haven't been let down. At the time, yes, the old adage 'if it seems too good to be true then it probably is' did cross my mind, but the thing that gave this credibility was the fact it was advertised in the Daily Mail.

I have to say that all contact with the Company (when you COULD contact the company) was reassuring and very professional. Like others, I ordered my goods on the first day of advertising, the 6th March. Like others, I was told my card would not be debited until the goods were despatched yet 3 days later the money was debited from my account. I called to check on delivery, 'Jack' was highly apologetic and said it was delayed by a week. I called again on the 22nd.

Seemingly now fitting in with the trend, I was promised delivery last Friday between 1-4pm. Of course, it didn't arrive. And of course all calls to the now defunct 0800 number, 'direct' landlline number and restaurant have all been to no avail.

As I paid by debit card I called the bank who tell me they can't do anything about it until 31 days after delivery should have taken place because there is nothing in writing throughout the order process.

I've written to Mr. Lefrancq and requested the urgent return of my money. No, I don't expect the champagne to turn up now, nor do I want it, I just want the safe return of my money.

We contacted the Daily Mail who are thankfully looking into matters (though they admit they can't get hold of anyone either). If anyone does hear anything it would be good to keep the info flowing, please.

ordered 7/3. was wary cos "bit too good to be true", hence usual doubts, also odd messages on the order line thru 6/3. checked with my credit card co. "what if"... once got through, sounded O.K., lady with Yorks accent, said they were in Leeds. was told deliveries would start from 15/3 "some of the wine already here, rest still to come from france". requested delivery after 23/3 as we would be away. on return, message on my answerphone that delivery would be 29/3 (yesterday) between 1.00 p.m. and 4.00 p.m. no show. gave them thru today, called CC co. (money was billed 18/3). refund will apply if no delivery, it goes through Retailer Disputes line, who I spoke to. they don't take action for 30 days from the transaction as no paperwork for the order. money will be refunded, though I'd rather have the wine!! like the other poster, if this is a "sting", it's an elaborate way to go about it!

Some years ago I bought some wine from an offer that looked "too good to be true." The wine turned up and it was excellent value at a fraction of the true price. This was sold by a third party as a result of a major merchant going bankrupt. The ad in the Telegraph had the same look and feel. Given that a number of outlets have closed down in recent months, the offer looked plausible.

It now srtikes me, having read this thread, that something has gone horribly wrong for the seller. I ordered, and it all seemed professional. I recieved a call to arrange delivery - it just didn't happen.

I'll take the wine or the money as long as I'm not out of pocket. To be safe, I've contacted the credit card company and they will investigate for me.
  • Hi - I am a news reporter based in Leeds and have been following your posts.

As a new user I am not allowed to post links, but the Yorkshire Evening Post published a story about SurplusWine yesterday - it can be found by seraching the news section of our website (please google SurplusWine.co.uk on our website, again I cannot leave a link).

A number of you have already been in touch but if anyone else wants to email or call, I'd be interested to learn what your delivery date was, and how much you spent with SurplusWine.co.uk

Unfortunately I am being blocked from leaving my contact details, but my email address can be found at the bottom of the story mentioned above.

    Thanks, Sophie

  • I have followed these jottings with interest. I am another who was seduced by the Telegraph ad. I asked for delivery to be delayed until mid April because I was going to be overseas. But I insisted on receiving order acknowledgement paperwork, After all, I was providing a credit card number to a call centre and had no knowledge of Mardenis. None came within two weeks of my order date, but the card was debited. If anyone receives their wine please advise if the specific items selected were delivered. I will contact Sophie Hazen.

I too was persuaded to buy from Surpluswine. My card was debited the following day - which is contrary to what I was told at the time of "purchase". I had been told that the money would be taken when the goods were ready for dispatch.

I still cannot decide whether or not this is an elaborate scam or a genuine marketing exercise that has gone horribly wrong. However, I still dream of receiving my £147 worth of wine.

Nonetheless, I took the precaution of getting my credit card changed and putting in a query to the credit card company just in case....

For anyone who has had their debit/credit card charged, then I would advise you to get in touch with Yorkshire Police immediately, because they are now taking this seriously. I believe that the restaurant was closed on the 26th March, and the staff were unable to enter the premises.
Maybe someone could verify that, and if it is correct, then I fear that there may be a lot of people out of pocket.

Thanks for that suggestion andygb. Which station of Yorkshire Police would you suggest I contact? Being from the South I have not had any contact with Yorkshire Police (not had much contact down here either!).

I tried to contact Yorkshire Police - the chap I spoke to seemed unaware of anything and told me to speak to my local Police and give them a statement which should the get passed on to Yorkshire.
