I have been in contact with West Yorkshire Police, obviously they are aware of the scam, which the Police now believe the amount of money involved is in the millions. The investigation is now being dealt with at a high level. West Yorkshire Police suggested that instead of flooding the telephone system, it would be better to email your details to them. I am now in the system and the Police say they will be in touch regarding a statement.
If we have lost our money, then at least lets try and get Mr. Lefranq a jail sentence, lets say 25 years.
  • I have now left my details with the WY Police Economic Crime Unit. They immediately recognised the Mardenis case and were very responsive. Thanks to those on this Thread who helped with the contact details. I will now approach Barclacard in the hope that the insurance element of my Card will cover the four items that were over £100.
  • I don't think the case has been proven to be fraud yet, although it certainly looks like it. To be honest, it looked like fraud from the start.

I know it's an emotive issue but there is a big question about whether people should be allowed to "chance" unbelievable purchases on their credit cards. How many people would have paid hard cash up front to suprluswine. My guess is nobody would have done that.

So where does the money come from to compensate the people who paid surpluswine for goods that they (at least some of them) had a sneaky feeling they would not receive? It should come from Denis Lefranque but if he is never found, who foots the bill?

Does anyone have a copy of the price list. I appear to have mislaid mine - at least I cannot find it on my PC. If someone can help, send me a PM and I will get back to you with my email address.

    Cheers

Santiago 1, I assume you were smarter than the rest of us and saw through the scam, but why are you taking an interest and posting on this forum.? A large advert which appears in Times, Daily Mail and Daily Express, is usually an indication that it's not some backstreet hustler. I paid by Natwest switch, and have no comebacks, and indeed have lost my money, if I was as smart as you, I would have paid by credit card, but then again that would not be morally right for you, would it ?
Mr. Lefrancq's restaurant No.3 York Place, has now closed, with the owner of the building owed many thousands, people have lost their jobs, do you think these people are mugs as well?
    Do one, will you!!
  • I am one of the lucky people who didn't see this ad, otherwise I would have been very tempted. I came across this thread while browsing and I'm extremely sorry for those who have been caught up in it. Just wondered if you had thought of SHOPS, 'the Safe Home Ordering Protection Scheme is the replacement for MOPS, the Mail Order Protection Scheme, and protects the consumer when buying directly from advertisements and catalogues inserted in the National Newspapers.' The newspapers do have some responsibility in checking the credentials of advertisers selling goods direct to their readers. In any case, I think it would be worth writing to the newspaper where you saw the ad. pointing out you are a regular reader and trust them to vet their advertisers.

I was lucky to get my money back via Nationwide credit card. To those who posted that they used a Nat West debit card they should be covered under the Visa debit card chargeback scheme. Hope this helps and thanks to all who have posted helpful items about this sorry mess.
  • Small comfort but if you paid by bank Debit Card and just happened to be using an authorised overdraft at that time, I do believe the Consumer Credit Act also covers you.
