Hi, I'm new and have a very apt user name so please go easy on me

I have Virgin, line rental £11
talk unlimited £7.95
phone, broadband and tv saving -£8
broadband £20
tv M £0
total price £30.95

So now I want to get wireless and don't think I quite understand it yet. I called Virgin and they said I can buy a router for either £40 or £50. The £40 is a G router which (I think) is not suitable for the xbox; the £50 is an N one which is okay for the xbox.

Can I buy a router from Amazon and will it work with Virgin? Do I plug it into the phone socket in the wall or into the black thing with lights that I already have (don't know if it is a router or modem)?

Yes, you can buy your own (make sure you don't buy an ADSL router though - if you are not sure, post here and we can tell you). It plugs into the 'black thing with lights' which is your cable modem.

But personally, if you are happy with the service you get from Virgin, I would ring them back and ask for a free one in return for another 12 month minimum period.

The G Router will be fine for Xbox live I have the same one and worked fine with mine and now my PS3,Plus it is in another room and I have no speed issues. as said before ring them up and try and haggle a free one.

yes you can purchase your own router but £40 doesn't sound too hideous.

Re. the Xbox. I think it depends what wirelss adapter you have as to whether it's compatible with N or G wireless.

As robt advises, what you need is a cable router, not an ADSL router.
Assuming that you are out of your minimum term contract, just tell Virgin that if they can't supply this FOC (which is what they would do for a new customer) then you will probably be taking your business elsewhere.

Ok, thanks everyone. Robt, I called asking for the free router, seeing as I am a longstanding customer blah blah blah but they said no. They offered me a special deal, longstanding customer etc, of paying £8 pcm and they would throw in the router for free. I said that I had seen that offer on the website and it was a standard thing when upgrading BB speed, not a special offer for me, and the guy denied it!

So I think I am going to cancel the whole thing and go with someone else unless they do it for free...you put the idea in my head now of having it free!

But I have been with them about 6 years, come on where's the loyalty to your customers?

Unfortunately unless you have a BT line, or are prepared to pay to install one, you are stuck with VM. You can't get any other broadband service on your cable connection.

It's not a cable router you want, the cable modem that Virgin supplied plugs into their cable. This modem has an Ethernet connection into which you plug any wireless router that takes an Ethernet connection.

True, but the OP asked if they can have to buy a wireless router from Virgin. The answer to that is "No you don't".

The router that Virgin provided to us was the Netgear WGR614v9 - which you could purchase from a number of places, or you could choose a different one.

Any router which will take an Ethernet input. Hence a cable router. The only input on most ADSL routers is a phoneline, because it has a built in modem.

I'll give you that, I've always just them "routers".
