Handbrake not covered under VW warranty

Please can anyone advise. I have a 1 year old VW Polo which has just undergone its first service. Since the moment I had the car I realised that I had to put the handbrake on quite high when on a steep incline. As it was a brand new car I stupidly assumed that this was what required and did not get it checked out straight away. This was picked up on during its first service and I was told that the cost of adjusting the cable would not be covered under the warranty as it was considered to be 'wear and tear' and I am looking at approx £100 to fix the problem. However the leakage from the sump which was discovered during the service is. Surely this can't be right?

Usually handbrake cable "adjustment" is not covered under warranty.
However, I don't understand why they want £100 to fix it! At most, one should not charge over £30 to do it.Happiness is buying an item and then not checking its price after a month to discover it was reduced further.0 -
if they are charging for adjusting the handbrake tell them to check the service schedules. always was and still should be part of a service.
any decent garage would do it as a goodwill gesture0 -
Take it to an independent garage. The man without a signature.0

Really, even though this was a problem from the outset (albeit I did not flag the issue with the VW garage)? I had a Polo from new for 7 years and I have never had to adjust the handbrake.
Thank you for the advice though and you're right I certainly won't be going through VW to have the work carried out, they're probably quoting the £60 automatic labour costs on top of the price of fixing the problem. It just seems unfair to be shelling out money already on a brand new car, the main reason I got rid of my old car and opted for a new car under warranty was to avoid this!!0 -
If you had the polo mint previously then you should have known it was a problem and got it looked at right away.

I'm stating the obvious but I think you just want molly coddled.
Start paying more attention to things like this and finance agreements. I'm guessing you have blonde hair?0 -
It seems to me that the handbrake cable has stretched which is a manufacturing defect and should be covered by VW Warranty.0

And I am guessing from your posts so far you have not read the 'Forum Etiquette' or are you just Anihilator under another user name.0 -

Anihilator's back again then, for how long this time?
Dealer to adjust the handbrake, I'd say £40, but I'd go for the goodwill gesture first though, as it really shouldn't need adjusting for a few years.0
