3 mobile broadband 18 month £5 contract ending

My 3 mobile broadband contract is coming to an end this month. I am on the discounted £5 per month 1Gb 18 month contract. Does anyone have any advice on renegotiating the contract and will the £5 discounted rate continue if I don't do anything? I am happy with the service but it is only for emergencies and I never reach the 1Gb limit so a larger limit would be no better for me. Any suggestions welcome.

    Hi Steve

My 18 month 15gb deal for £15 is up in a week or so. I called them asking for options and looking for a new deal. The same 15gb service is now £30.

Anyway, they offered me another 18 months at the same £15 / 15gb, with a new dongle thrown in for good measure. I accepted. The new dongle BTW actually works better - I get a better signal than before from the same places.

Thanks mickeypops, that is very helpful. Were they going to charge you £30 per month if you hadn't called them?

Yes they were. My £15 deal, like your £5 one, was a half price offer at the time, and you will default to the standard tariff unless you call.

Final tip: On the phone, I think I selected the option about "wanting to leave 3 mobile" so maybe those guys have access to special retention prices.

Definitely the final tip: For goodness sake don't go over your data allowance. They'll charge you 10p per Mb which is over £100 per Gb! They will put a setting on your account preventing you from going over if you ask.

Thanks for that, I do keep a close eye on my usage already.
  • You can get a 12 gb prepaid dongle for £70, which if you stick to 1gb per month will last for up to 12 months. No contracts, no extra charges ...

I got 24gb for £118.24, which was a special offer from Dixons.

I'm in month 20 (I think) of my contract and still paying £16 for 15GB so I don't think it automatically resorts to the normal price...

That is interesting buffalox, it might be better to leave it in that case rather than sign up for another contract period.

    Hi Buffalox

Perhaps you signed up for a 24 month contract at the start? There were lots of different deals doing the rounds a couple of years back.:)

Steve - I would definitely recommend contacting Three BEFORE your current deal ends.
  • Thanks mickeypops, I rang 3 customer services and they did indeed indicate that the contract would resort to full price if I didn't renew. I took the same option as you, a new faster modem and renewed for a further 18 months at the same price. There was a charge of £1.95 for carriage.
