Do I understand correctly that you have 700 domain names PN? That would take me all day just to keep track of.
No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?

You might be interested in a Firefox Add on that shows you what's being tracked on sites.

Just go to http://www.ghostery.com/ and install it, then when you're on a website it shows you in a list in the top right hand corner what tracking is there... e.g. google analytics, etc

It's actually annoying as it's in the way I find ... but you might like it.

Sorry, I didn't see your post earlier for some reason.

it's interesting, but to be honest, I'm not too worried about people tracking me online, I do get a little bit paranoid about some forms of malware, and try to keep general security and my backup strategy quite good. It has got to be a habit, ever since I had to go back to using windoze.

Even then, it's nowhere near as important to me as it used to be, when I was computer banking and doing highly confidential work for clients... these days my work is a lot more bog standard.

That's in Grampian Gardens - just round the corner from where we lived when we got married. Nearest station would be Cricklewood.

And not very far -about a mile- from where we had a communal house in the late 60s, down in Kilburn. cool-smiley-026.gifcool-smiley-027.gif

Had to take a quick poke about. 'Our' house looks reasonably smart, and the road is as I remember it, but the nearby busy thoroughfare has changed greatly.

There's a Tesco Express where the corner shop used to be.
    How appropriate....:(

Just go to http://www.1and1.co.uk and buy some. You don't need hosting. Just the domain name.

You WILL need hosting .... just not today/now.

Is it true that domain name sellers track what people search for and then put the prices up?

    No. 700 logins/passwords. Only about 35 domains.

Mostly though they're either just forwarded somewhere, or constantly under construction.

I kind of actively write on just 4 of them.
1] Main one, the original one. Different host entirely to the rest.
2] One with about 30 entries on it, if I don't touch a thing for 4 days it selects the oldest one and republishes it with today's date.... added 3 more entries to that today.
3] Kind of a blog with everything in it that I know, find, etc that might be interesting for other people doing what I do
4] One that seemed a good idea, but I've not found a template I like the look of - and it turns out to be a lot of work to maintain.

    Then there are others.
5] Spent the last day or so setting this one up to auto-blog, so I don't have to do anything with it for now.

Then I write articles.... about 250 so far. They need responding to, updating, tweaking, checking. But that's on somebody else's website. I go somewhere and I write on their website.... that's how I won $200 last month.

I have ideas for all the domains, but so little time because all this stuff does take a lot of time and I need to keep on top of what's new too.... I love the "what's new" which is research and reading and downloading and trying things out. I only built what I have to find out how things work really.

Then I get about 200 emails a day too..... most of them I don't read... but I can search for them if I want something.

    No, and yes.

Legitimate domain name sellers put a hold on the domain, so you will be able to buy it for a limited period of a couple of hours at their fixed price (not sure, I seem to remember it being 24 hours).

In the past, sometimes people have taken notice of these holds, and bought the domain up, as a form of guzumping. Not sure if it still happens these days.

    No.

I'm sure there's a thriving business in keeping on top of what people are searching for, then registering the domains and re-selling them, either as developed sites or just the name.

I have a friend with over 300 domains, he was offered about £500k for one once and turned it down.

I have another friend who, aged 18, was offered $200k for one he'd paid just $4k for and was just mucking about with one page of !!!!!! on it. He came to ask me what he should do, I said "SELL!" and he did. Now he plays with penny stocks and is coming up roses too. jammy bugg4h.

And I just get someone putting 'Shropshire' on the end of the one I thought up!

The ''new cat'' is a girl.....vet gave her a general before checking..oops. She's got poor kidney readings and has had an infection recently...probably when I thought she had something like bladder infection...but is otherwise well. she's also not 12 as I had been told, but just looks very old for ''possibly about 5''. so far from being and old boy she's a young girl.

but pink whistley is furious. Any time I talk to the ''new cat'' Duck Whistley starts a song and dance routine so OTT it practically includes Jazz hands. She also makes that noise that means ''birds'' a lot at Duck, but not when other people talk to duck, only when I do.
